I have a 1986 FJ which has been restored with much attention to quality and only minimal attention to cost. Randy @ RPM has been a most valuable source for parts and information as has e-bay something a 57 year old man new nothing about until starting the restoration. I have a problem that does not seem to want to go away the speedo needle will bounce as I have replaced the instruments, the cable along with speedo drive and unit that drives the drive and fits inside the front wheel still have the bounce it might be better than it was but still very annoying. I would appreciate any suggestions or thoughts anyone might have, also presently have a Vance & Hines 4 into 1 header but would like to replace with a 4 into 2 system any suggestions.
Thanks

I know when my first instrument panel was bouncing I took it apart and found half moon shaped pieces of metal in it and did not know where they went, till i went to remove the needle they are glued to the needle cover. I would pull it apart and see if you have any of those half moons and then super glue them back in.

4 into 2 exhaust?
Either get a stock system or Delkevik (sp?) makes all the parts needed in SSteel.

If you replaced the cable and didn't use an OEM part, it needs lubricated with a heavier grease.

+1 Try spray white lithium grease in a spray can. Shoot some down the cable sheath then lube cable it's self. Hope this helps.

Speedo bounce is sometimes caused by the square ends of the cable not seating correctly in the square holes at the drive and clock ends, this can be because the cable is slightly too short to reach or is incorrectly tightened..another thing that can cause it is a frayed end or a broken inner cable where as the two ends spin they touch intermittantly..

I would remove the cable, strip the inner from the outer spray wd40 or some other spray down the outer to make sure it is clean and examine it for any visible damage then reassemble the cable and see how much overlap you have at each end, you can get a pretty good idea of how much you need by inserting the inner into the speedo and gripping it with your thumbnail before withdrawing it to see how much actually goes in..then do the same with the drive end...I would suspect about 1/2" each end..but that is only a guess..I will be removing my instrument panel in the next two weeks so if you haven't sorted the problem by then I will let you know what mine is like..
