A minor modification.

When I got my FJ, I expected to do some work. The last little mod was the replacement of the voltage regulator. Some of the problems the bike came to me with make a lot more sense from where I stand today, then they did when I bought it. I couldn't keep tail light bulbs in it, one or the other was always popping. The lights were modified to eliminate the signal stalks, a modification I honestly loath. The relays for the horn, and the high beam were out. A few dash lights kept going out. The clock would work for a week, take a week off, and need to be reset.
Reviewing topics, here, led me to test the output, and according to Mr. Fluke, the thing was good for 15.261 volts here and there. I bought the Race Tech version, mostly for the neat install, inside the alternator. It went well, and it seems to put out 13.45 volts, or so, at 4000 rpm, now. Had a nice little ride, after dinner, and everything seems to be good. I'm pretty sure the previous owner had the bike serviced, and was not a wrench twirler-he didn't honestly know if the tools were under the seat in our first phone call. I'm not being critical, but, a shop you are paying to do work doesn't have time to keep abreast of good modifications and what goes wrong with individual models of bike, especially 30 year old bikes. My seller replaced the FJ with a few year old 650 fuel injected bike, something that made a lot of sense for him.

I would be lost without you guys. Between the age of the components, and the extensive modifications made to my bike, by others, it is sometimes hard to know where to start looking for trouble. The list of work I have done is extensive, but, it is more maintenance and updates then heavy modifications.

Thanks, fellas. It has been a real good ride. I want to keep it that way.

Awesome!

And that very well sums up half the value of this site - an excellent source of knowledge and experience on nearly every aspect of these bikes.  The other half...the people and characters we get to know both digitally and in person at times.

The voltage regulator has worked perfectly for the last week or so. So nice to get on the bike for a ride, and not worry about what gremlins are lurking in the electrical system to challenge me.

I highly recommend the Race Tech regulator. Not identical to the original, but, fits in the same space, and installs easily.
