Hella Supertones Install - Space Problem

I'm switching out my stock horn for a pair of High/Low Hella Supertones. They're bigger then the stock horn. Each horn is like 4 times louder then stock! The high tone horn went in fine where the old horn was. I want to jam the low tone horn in there too (they're exactly the same size) but I can't make it fit! Not much space up there, just enough for the forks to move back and fourth. I think if I make some kind of bracket it might work.....? Has anyone done this? If so, can you send me some pictures? If there's a magical bracket fairy out there can you make me one?

Also, if I get both in, should I just attach the duel horn relay to the stock horn line? Or should I trace it back to whatever stock relay and switch it for this duel tone relay?

Also, what gauge wire should I be using? I'm out and need to buy new wire so I want to get the best size for this and general wiring.

Loud horns save lives! (Stock horns make kids on bicycles laugh and point.)

meep meep.

HONK HONK!

I had the same problem so i just used the side reflector mounts to hang the supertones from.

makes a wall of sound around the FJ!

you definitely want to use a relay and pull your operating power from the battery.  Use the stock horn circuit to activate the relay.....Doesnt have to be really big wire since you usually only use the horns for short bursts 16-18 Ga should be fine.

they really will wake up the idiots.... especially the ones coming out of the side roads (which i seem to have the most trouble with around here)   the horns on the sides of the bike really let the music travel.

oh and with the horns in this position getting to the headlight bulb is now a non issue.

:good2: Nice lookin bike! Why don't I see any mirrors? Might be just the angle the picture is taken from. Handlebar risers, also? I'm having some of the 3/4" under-the-clipon risers milled as we speak. The horn location looks pretty trick. I used to have some Rocket Racing wheels on my 69 Roadrunner that looked just like 'em.

Wow, yea, sweet bike!

Thanks for the advice, I like it. I think I'll leave the high tone up front and aim the low tone off the port side. You've got me thinking I could get a second set and aim the new high tone out the stern and the other low off the starboard (nautical terms are fun!). Then I'll be wrapped in a cocoon of ear splitting. I live in NYC. Back when I used to ride to work every day I got bumped by a car about once a week. It's pretty ugly. People push you out of lanes here, and I seriously mean they do it. Not by accident and not figuratively. We have no fault laws here so no matter how they attack you it's half his fault and half my fault. If you are sitting in your parked car with the keys in your pocket and someone hits you it's half your fault. My old BMW R100 had air horns and a siren. Pedestrians can't hear horns no matter how loud they are, but they hear sirens. Cars ignore sirens but horns that sound like a truck they hear. The air horns were loud but I blew them out from using them so much. I think these Hellas will work better.

Any chance I could get a closer picture of the horn mount, just so I can see how you did it?

Any chance you would tell me EVERYTHING about your hard bags? I posted a while ago asking about hard bags and din't hear much back. I really want hard bags! (NYC again.)

The hella's make the expensive car noises... loud enough to make people physically jump in their seats  :good2:

guarranteed to make the gang of wanna be tour de francers line up in a row on the white line

the horns never get tired

basically i just used a straight hanger from the reflector hanger thats welded to the frame (on my 86 it is)   one bolt on top
and the big nut on the back of the horn.

my luggage is Hepco becker

the side bags are the junior 40's

they still make racks for every model year FJ but they have to be custom ordered from the factory in Germany thru a US distributor as they wont sell direct to the USA (least they didnt when i orered in 2005 but it wouldnt hurt to ask them again).

Do the "my bike" section to find the rack that fits your year FJ  they have pre 91 and post 91 models.

i really like how the luggage mounts and the racks still look kind of clean when the bags are off.

and yes i still have all the original red and white bodywork in case i ever want to go into non hot rod mode  :good2:

Kinda funny Frank - you've gone into the low profile / walmart greeter mode on the list of late and not many of the newer members have heard much about Brutus...

you could say i did a ton of motor work  started out with a brand new crate 1250 engine.. the fella i had build the engine would not start with 21 yr old engine cases and he also credited me for the brand new parts we didnt use out of the engine (crank, pistons, connecting rods, valvetrain and cams)

then tore it all apart

did a little crank lightening

1349 pistons and special grind cams

Keihin FCR39 flatslides

the engine builder named it.

I'm only pushing about 170Hp @ the rear wheel since i kept the stock sized valves and had them keep the compression low so i could run pump gas

the impressive part is the 115Lb/ft of torque....thanks to the improved cylinder filling there is more torque available at 5000 RPM than the stock FJ has in total!

it is so much fun... with the lightened crank and the flatslides it gives me everything i could possibly ever want RIGHT NOW!

My right wrist had to be totally recalibrated with this engine as it will decelerate just as fast as it accelerates.... DO NOT CHOP THE THROTTLE FROM HIGH RPMs IN THIRD GEAR!... NEVER! (again)

want to spin the back tire with the front wheel off the ground in second gear?   No problem, just whack the throttle and hang on....power wheelies on demand in third gear? wind her up about 8 grand and see what happens!...

LOL my corbin seat is not sculpted the way it is by accident....  with the 17/41 stock gearing the bike would try and leap right out from under me!  It was literally scarey and i wondered to myself if i shouldnt have wished for everything i got!

Now I am currently running a 18/38 sprocket combo (200 mph?) to make the first three gears more useable on the street and the bike is a whole lot more fun to ride (read less raging bull)

if you count the FZ1 front/ rear ends and the digital dash..... the actual frame is the only original part left of my 86 FJ
(the lovely stock red and white bodywork i have safely stored away along with the stock engine)

ok thats about enough about me.... back to walmart greeter mode! :good2:

KOokaloo! (i really mean it when i say it)

fj11.5

awesome, Fj, absolutely awesome, I want a brutus engine now  :good2: :yahoo:
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

84 Fj1100  effie , with mods
( 88 ) Fj 1200  fairly standard , + blue spots
84 Fj1100 absolutely stock standard, now more stock , fitted with Fj12 twin system , no rusted headers for this felicity jayne

Yeah.... Speechless.  Talk about taking the high road!!   The valve cover looks really cool- so this was a Legends car motor from new?

I can only imagine what a quick winding motor at that capacity might feel like- capable of power wheelies in 3rd would probably put my license in jeopardy...

Inspiring!

Yes legends racing sealed 1250 crate engine supplied and built by Ken Joyce in Nashville Tenn.

I believe they took somewhere around 12 lbs of weight off the crank.

Imagine the biggest baddest two stroke ever with a monster arm stretching bottom end and a top end rush that will blur your vision and keep pulling until you run out of either guts or straight road. :good2:

it sounds really cool.... with a nice deep note like a (slightly muffled) small block chevy V8 that builds revs like an indy car!

like i said before.... right wrist re- training (and re gearing) was required .... to save my license and quite possibly my life!

i would not recommend this type of engine build for the uninitiated.... while it does bring a huge grin to ride it i am quite well aware of how quickly things could go wrong with careless throttle application.(and also throttle reduction ouch)

absolute concentration is required AT ALL TIMES while riding this machine! the do not throttle chop rule was caused by  unintentional wheelie the bike wanted to do in front of a policeman.... i swear the hand of God crushed my jewels against the back of the gas tank as the rear wheel hopped up in the air ..... it was all i could do to find a place to pull over and throw up.

No ticket as the poilceman said the bike decelerated so fast his radar could not get a lock on me.

Gentle on the throttle....be very gentle indeed! :good2:
