My dad just bought another FJ! The problem is, it's not charging. It has a brand new battery. Everytime i plug the generator plug in (Red & Brown Wires) the lights dim. I put the voltmeter on it ans my FJ at the same time. Both at 1500 rpms My bike charges at 13.8 and this bike is at 12.1. I have the cover off the generator Which terminals should i be testing?

follow the wires vfrom the alternator up and find the plastic connector.... odds are it has melted.

if it and the wires are good all the way to the battery then check the ground wire to the rear of the engine... feel for crunchy spots in the wire.

I checked that plastic connector (You mean the red one?) and also checked the ground. The ground wire is good too.

There is a two wire plastic connection laying below the carbs that goes to the alternator.  It may be burned up not alowing voltage to the alternator.

Dont ask me how I know this...

You want the plastic connector that sits outside, rests on the rubber piece that runs along the frame (L side), behind the plastic side cover. 2 wires that run from the reg/rect. to the battery. They tend to get resistive at the spade terms and overheat, melt the conn bodies and cause problems.  I replaced the terms, and the wire to the battery.... Liberally covering the connectors with dielectric grease.

Looked like the pic Eric posted while I was writing this.....   :drinks:

I got the parts and a GOOD crimper from Vintage Connections

That red connector is fine. Thats the one im talking about when i say that if i plug the connector in it will dim the lights. I't like the bike is better without it connected, I know that sounds stupid.

Sounds sorta like somethings shorted to ground..... Like a big load is being applied. Can't think of any other reason the lights would dim.
