Mercury doesn't dry out, it evaporates, so volatile it will work its way thru glass given enough time.

Isn't "drying out" for lack of a better word evaporate???

For the late response, but I just want to make sure everyone understands the Motion Pro mercury filled sync tool is no longer available. There is some sources for mercury if you have spilled or sucked your out of the tool. It is expensive and as always toxic.

Motion pro introduced the SyncPro as the replacement of the mercury filled gauges.

I stock both the SyncPro and a set of mechanical gauges. Ultimately, it comes down to preference. I can offer that I have both tools and I use the gauges exclusively anymore.

The needle type gauge does not care what position it is in, so I can lay it flat next to the carbs as I sync them. I do not have to have the hanging vertically and looking away from the task at hand to read the gauge. Also you can crank the throttle and not worry about sucking out the fluid.

With the SyncPro if you do suck out the fluid the replacement fluid doesn't have a great expensive the old mercury fluid had.

I'm probably gonna go with the mechanical gauges, mainly for the reasons you listed. I was also thinking about building my own. I found a website that sells pool equipment and they have vacuum gauges that go up to 30" of Hg for about 5 bucks a pop. Would I be able to do this with any sort of vacuum gauge (like the one I listed) or do I need a special vacuum gauge???

FJ Dude- you got to this before I did . I AM AN IDIOT!  ok I said it , yes drying out and evaporate is the SAME thing. Don't know what happened at my previous post, some brain neurons got all mixed up or something.  I owe you a beer.

I have a few of them including the twin max, vertical mercury tubes and the Morgan Carbtune.  I find the Morgan Carbtune to be the easiest for the FJ's.  There is no hassle of accidently losing the mercury and is just as accurate!  The twin max works well on BMW boxer style engines.  The Morgan Carbtune is made of good quality and comes with it's own case.  You can purchase it online for about a 100.00 bucks.
