buying advice

hello all! i have had a thing for fj's since i drooled on one at the yamaha dealer in 1989. (i was buying a used 750f honda, not enough coin for the super cool fj         anyway i'm back in the market for a relatively inexpensive bike and have spied a handful of fj1200's for sale. I would appreciate any advice on preferred years, equipment etc.  Anything i should be looking for in particular outside of the standard condition and state of fluids?  (i did try search but didn't have much luck......) thanks, Steve.

what is the best year fj?   
well the 84 red and silver sure is purdy.
the 86/87 red and whites are the fastest in the 1/4 mile. but the trans blows 2nd gear.
the 89/90 have better trans forks and 17" front wheel with better brakes electric fuel pump.
the 91/93 have rubber insolated engine for less vibration and bigger windscreen for crusier mode and weigh more.

so you can not pick a bad one they are all good , just find the lowest miles with the best price and looks.

All of the variants have their own merits but few faults, I would look for one that is in good condition and personally i would ignore milage to a great extent.

If you can find one with sensible mods that have already been done like braided lines, aftermarket shock and so on as well that would be a bonus.

You can mod the wheels, suspension and so on later if you want but I would look for a good basic bike to build on.

The FJ motor is capable of very high milages and I have heard of them hitting 150000 miles, mine is on 85000+ and still going strong.

Its most likely going to be down to what you can afford, the good bit is all of the FJs were good one way or the other.

Other may disagree with me but thats my two pennies worth.

What sort of riding do you do Steve?  Commute, weekend warrior?

primarily weekend warrior.......think these are the perfect bikes for some soft luggage and a mini road trip!
