... should be no suprise, right?

A friend at work bought a 2002 GSX-R 1000 a few weeks ago. So the friendly trash-talking has been non-stop since. I admitted that he had me on top speed, but quickness remained to be proven... until today. We both found an open stretch and we both nailed it at about 30 MPH. I tucked behind the windscreen and kept the RPM near the redline, but he was *very* slowly pulling away. That's fine. My old 1988 horse gave him a run for his money.

:flag_of_truce:

I told him that on his bike, it's like you look down and say "Wow... I'm going 150."

On my bike it's like, [ROOOOOAAAAARRRR] "HOLY SMOKES!!!!!" [ground shaking] "I'M GOING 150!!!!!!"

i think you may do better if you ran him from a standing start for 1/8 mile...... the FJ will launch better than just about any sportbike out there and he may just get a good look at your tail light.   :good2:

A new GSXR1000 is about 200HP per liter with a pipe and ECU reflash or Power Commander tuning. I guess a turbo FJ  would keep up with it......maybe.

^ On race gas and under the right moonlight, possibly.  An 02 sure isn't though.

In a relatively short race, the rider will make all the difference.  That said, a good rider on either machine will go comfortably faster on the suzuki.  The FJ should manage the advantage to the 330' clock though.

http://www.dragbike.com/dbnews/templates/fast1320_z3.aspx?articleid=6591&zoneid=3  ZX-10 @183HP with just a reflash. Bone stock.  With slip on, fuel/ignition tuning etc 198HP SAE and 202HP Best Weather scenario. That is a big#.  http://www.dragbike.com/dbnews/templates/fast1320_z2.aspx?articleid=6677&zoneid=2  BTW...I think the Brock slip on is hideous.
A 2002 GSXR1000 should have about 150HP to the rear wheel. What was a stock 86/87 FJ...104HP or so? And about 80lbs heavier at least.

HP to the rear wheel doesnt mean anything if the rider cant keep the front wheel on the ground!

just sayin....

Point well made. Personally I'd say the rear tire is always the limiting factor. I had nitrous on my FJ and with a 60HP shot (about 210HP) it would just light up the rear even in 5th gear @ around 60mph. A progressive feed would have helped but I ended up taking it off the bike. It broke stuff.
I have seen big # busa's on my buddy's dyno and watched Shinko's/ Mickey Thompson's literally melt after a few runs.

Never use a shinko, MCR2, or anything else soft on a dyno.  Use a hardish street tire, for exactly that reason, unless you like picking rubber chunks out of the walls.

If you've got a decent tire and it's up to temp (read, if you are using a 17" wheel and have a tire designed this century wrapped around it), unless you're sitting very low and/or long, you shouldn't spin on decent pavement.  Instead you'll stand right on end!  The FJ is quite a bit longer than many typical sportbikes (58" vs as short as 54"), and is pretty launchable.

The higher you've raised things for handling, the more likely you are to wheelie.  Drag machines are long and low for good reason!  I've actually been fighting with the math on calculating instant center of gravity vs max accelleration, and you'd be surprised at how dramatic the times can be for even relatively minor changes.  10lbs of lead in the lower framerails will move the C-g a whopping 0.3" or so (including the weight of the rider laying on the tank, natch), but it can result in as much as half a tenth in the 60' times.
