Fuel Gauge Problem

Hello all and good luck for the new year! The fuel gauge on my 84 is staying on empty until 10 - 15 mins into a ride then it decides to work. I hunted down a genuine replacement, however I will have to mortgage my house to buy it, any thoughts would be appreciated, cheers.

I had no end of problems with my fuel gauge, from the needle being so jittery that you could not discern any fuel level, to in the end showing empty when the tank was half full.  I sourced the prolem to be electrical, from the fuel tank electrical connection near the battery, to some wiring that was rubbing against the frame near the steering head end of the bike.

I used a resistance meter to find wires with a break or earth and managed to mostly solve the problem, now the gauge is much less jittery and more accurate.

Sadly, no matter how much i tried, I cannot get the fuel warning light to work, but I will not replace the fuel sender unit, I have no idea how they got the bloody thing in the tank in the first place!

In short, check the wiring, it worked well for me and might save you alot of money.

if you get stuck i have a fuel gauge i could send you,  but fair chance its the tank sender unit, easy enough to take out , if you have a manual it shows how to test them

Hi froggerI have had some problems with my fuel gauge also  and have had a few leads on  a new ones  just to find out the it was not available form that
supplier would you mind sharing the name of the supplier for that new yamaha fuel gauge that you found. I'm shire  they are out there. I recently found and bought a  new fuel tank for my 85 from Germany that had been sitting in a warehouse collecting dust for years.
