Header pipe re-install into chamber trick?

Hey, all, I'm reinstalling my headers after replacing the exhaust gaskets, & I did number the pipes 1,2,3& 4. (At least I think I did. I laid them down in that order.)

   They all look alike side-by-side, bend & length-wise, with the exception of the little drain bolt(?) on each one, 2 pipes have one dead center facing the ground & 2 facing off center to the ground.

    Since the pipes are all shaped the same, but the chamber has 2 different levels for insertion, (2 outside are higher, 2 inside are lower) is there a trick to installing the pipes without putting too much strain on the pipes?

Or do I just need to loosen the chamber enough to fit everything in & then tighten everything up? I'm afraid of bending or tweaking the pipes... or worse.

Ah crap....    :blush: Hate when I do this.

After closer investigation, turns out that the pipes are indeed different. The 2 inside pipes are bent a tad lower to accomodate the lower ports to the chamber.

Note: The 2 inside pipes are the ones w/ the little drain bolt off center to the ground.

Hope someone else learns from my mistake.

Look closely at the stamped numbers on the bottom of the pipes...They end in a 1 or 2 or 3 or 4... that's the cylinder they go on...
The bottom bolts are for oxygen sensors which are used for fine tuning the fuel/air mixture.

I found these numbers when I was in the process of polishing the header pipes.

Wow, thanks Pat & Leon, I learn something new every time I get on here. Wasn't aware of the oxygen sensor tuning at all.

Nice polishing job, Leon, my numbers were virtually invisible, covered up w/ black paint, so that 's why I didn't notice them. And fortunately, I did get them on the right cylynder.  

One more question if I may ask....

What's the trick to holding the new gasket in place when re-inserting the pipe? Swearing doesn't work... I tried!! :dash2:

A smear of grease will do the trick.....works with most things. Is even handy on the end of a screwdriver when working on screws in hard to get at places.
