ok, bare with me here guys just trying to wrap my head around this......what are the advantages of a 4 into 1 exhaust? Correct me if I'm wrong, the only down side i can possibly see with the stock exhaust is the collector is slightly restrictive as well as the cans. Am i right to assume that the collector aslo acts like an x pipe and balances the exhaust, resulting in a smoother running engine?? The only advantage that jumps out at me with the 4 into 1 is possible higher exhaust velocity and exhaust scavanging to help with performance particularly high end performance??

4 into 1's are lighter and due to cross scavenging at higher revs will generally gain a couple of extra hp.
IMO, for most riders in street situations, the better mid-range response outweighs the extra Hp, so the only "real" advantage is the weight loss.

There will also be a hole somewhere in the  rev band with a 4-1.  Won't be necessarily huge, but it'll show up on a dyno.  Just the nature of the beast, a 4-2-1 is a better design as far as that goes, (but still not as good for the top).

4-1 pipes make the most peak power as a rule, big numbers from 7k to 9.5k.

Unless you weigh a zillion pounds, it's not like a 4-1 is going to suddenly run the engine out of torque from 3-6k and you'll be forever shifting like a twostroke 250.  You'll be fine.

Thanks guys! I dont really plan on trying to SQUEEZE as much power as possible from my slightly aged machine. I would just like a little more volume from from my pipes. I think I'll try to modify some sleek exhaust cans that purr at idle and sing with some throttle. I will concentrate on the suspension for now. Hopefully Randy will get the emulators situation tested and ready soon. Thanks again.

Normally a couple of open cans give more exhaust gas flow than a 4/1, with no loss at the midrange
