Motor Mount Kit

Happy New Year,

I was going through the pictures posted by Colin in regards to his motor mount issue, and I wanted to pass along that I am in the middle of designing and will be testing a urethane motor mount kit to replace all of the mounts on the FJ. I found that mine was stuck as well and while the removal was not as dramatic, I think I have found a way to make this bike more comfortable.

I noticed when I was disassembling my bike; I can see a couple of issues that I could address. There are a total of eight motor mounts on the FJ. On my 86 five of them are rubber and three of them are solid aluminum.

After reading for years about the servicing of the mount that froze up on Collins engine, I looked carefully at the O.E. motor mounts as I was disassembling my bike is reference to vibrations transferred through the frame and ultimately to the handle bars.
I noted on both of my bikes the rubber mounts have sagged severely putting the engine in a twisted bind in the chassis. You can see by the photos of the left lower mount how offset the washer is to the chassis mounting eye.

Since the left side has the upper aluminum bushing the sag is not present.

The engine is twisted or dropped to the right of the bike as you can see in the air filters location to the tabs on the frame.

I have located all of the bushing that will slip directly into place replacing all of the mounts. I am working on the internal bushing sizes now and will be installing this prototype kit into my bike. It will be in my bike for sure and if the results are significant they will be headed directly into the wife's bike as well. There will be plenty of miles on the system prior to the WCR and I will be happy to let those in attendance give it a feel if they are indeed better.

I have been asked about the stiffness of urethane instead of rubber, but the aluminum bushing that becomes stuck and the rubber that sags causes the engine to be rigid mounted in the chassis, so the urethane should offer the insulated mounting it was designed to have.

If you want to see all the pictures I took during disassembly the can be seen here; http://s1215.photobucket.com/home/racerrad8

Yeah, Randy,   a little less vibration would be good.

a lot of us with the 86 could use new rubbers.

By looking at the part numbers the kit I am working on will fit any FJ up to 1990.

I am working on getting a 92 to the shop so that I can pull the engine and see if I can make a kit for the later years as well, since I see those rubber motor mounts are listed as obsolete.

Brilliant idea Randy  :good2:

I will be very keen to know how you get on and if it all works out as well as I think it will, I for one would be very interested.
I replaced 3 of the rubber bushings when I refitted my engine as I (like you) had noticed how much sagging had taken place.

Very much look forward to reading up and seeing how it goes  :i_am_so_happy:

I've got a 91 FJ and I'm looking at replacing all the motor mounts on my bike. When you come up with mounts for the later models I'd like to be first in line to buy some. Please let me know when you come up with some. Thanx. Tom

Why replace?  They can be serviced.

Search for previous threads on this very subject.

[edit: oops, I see you HAVE found the proper thread...  and sevicing is less of an option than I thought.  The below is still true though...]

Welcome BTW.  If you get a chance, mosy over to the introductions section and introduce yourself, tell us a bit about yourself.

Did you ever make any progress on these mounts, Randy?  I'm interested to hear how they worked out and if you'll be making them available.

Here is what I posted last week about the mounts and all of the other parts in the works. If they make it through the WCR without any problems I will be sending parts to the machine shop for bulk production as I have been making them individually on my lathe; much too time consuming.

I'm checking my mounts out, noticed a little more vibration that normal on my last ride.

Any special tools required to replace?
