Chinese Quad Problems

I just bought my son a cheap quad in Budapest today. It's a 125cc. I only paid about $650 for it, brand new. Seems this seller gets Chinese imports into Germany, then hauls them to his warehouse in Budapest. He has a "floor model" of every style, and when you buy one, you get a big box and build it yourself. It's a simple process.

I got it home and put it together today, and had very minor hardware issues. The tie rod ends at the steering shaft were installed at the factory, but not tightened, and some metal pieces were bent. No big deal for me. Once I got it all assembled, I turned the key on, but when I applied either brake, the starter engaged. WOW. Now I need to take a day with my meter and figure the wiring out. Oh yeah, it's made in China and all instructions are in German. Nice. Budapest is a 2 hour drive away for me, so returning the quad would be a challenge.

I'll post a picture sometime. It really does look sharp. But I guess you get what you pay for.

Surprisingly, no. I disconnected the leads from the left brake handle (rear brake), re-attached it and everything started working again. I don't think that makes any sense. It is some sort of safety feature - I need to hold the brake lever for the starter to engage with the start button. No fuel in it yet. I'll get it running soon, I hope.

You just needed to re-boot the fancy CAN-BUS, -they use the latest technology on the Chinese knock-off stuff these days...

It RUNS. But it sure is NOT a refined machine. I've tinkered with the carb for a few minutes today. I think it's as good as it gets. I did a front end alignment also - that was WAY off. The transmission is a no-clutch 3-speed plus reverse. It's VERY rough and bangs loudly during most shifting.

It's got electric start *ONLY.* That's a bad idea not having a kick or pull start option. As I adjusted the carb, it died a few times and I ran the battery down. It won't "bump-start" either.

The neatest thing is that it has a key fob remote. It actually has an alarm, panic button, and... FUNCTIONAL REMOTE START. How about that?
