86 Swingarm into a 92?

Howdy all. Have a chance to pick up a 92 frame that is in much better condition than my 86's. How compatible are the two? Of course I will want to put all my good parts on this frame. I have a Penske in my 86 now, so I would want to use my existing swingarm. Is this a straight bolt on? or is it a major mod job? :scratch_one-s_head:

the suspension pickup points and linkages are completely different from the 86 to a late model..... you would do better to find a late model swingarm/shock linkage and get a different lower clevis for your penske to fit it.

engineering a new shock linkage to fit it all up is not a easy or pleasant task.. BTDT

Thanks Frank.  :good:
The 92 swingarm is there, but because I have a penske for my 86 I was hoping to use it. Can the shock be changed from an eye type to a clevis type easily? Or does it mean a trip back down to Traxion? I also like the idea of an aluminum swingarm compared to the steel one.
What about the footpeg brackets? Will my older style have the same bolt  paterns?

the eye on the lower part of the penske can be changed to a clevis easily...... you may also need different bushings for the upper mount... dont know about the footpeg brackets but i seriously doubt the interchangeability of many if any other parts from the early model to the late model.

Jake, considerable differences in the rear sub-frame also...and I believe the footpeg mounting brackets may be different - in that the exhaust hangers on post '90 were on the subframe rather than on the mounting plates.

I'm just comparing parts on a 90 and a 91, different shock mountings - top and bottom as Frank said........don't forget the 92 has rubber motor mounts, the 86 didn't.
And the width of the swingarms is different.....the aluminium arms being wider at the wheel end due to the box section being thicker than the steel swingarms......I would guess that the chain adjusters are different also, for the same reason.

Not sure what else will need modification.

Sounds like it might be worth looking for a better match. Oh well. Its just that Cyril, who I believe you met at the 07 spring rally, along with his son Bryan, has a nice 92 frame that he is looking to get rid of.

Jake,
They were good folks, really enjoyed meeting both of them. I hope they are doing well......

The equivalent lower clevis is from a Kawi EX500 (at least that's what was written on the Penske-supplied lower clevis for my '93).  Should be an easy R&R.  Probably something they have in stock.

Good to know David....one of these days I'm going to get me one of those Penskes.

How is the recovery coming along mate?
