modifying stock muffler?

Recently purchased an '89 FJ.  Nice bike!  A really great touring machine.  Great torque.
One small complaint:  This bike is too quiet.  Not interested in a loud bike, but this is so quiet that all I hear is some fairing vibrations and the wind noise from my helmet (stock windshield is very short)
Any of you tried cutting/modifying the stock muffler to increase the sound a bit?  A good-running and revving 4-cylinder should sound good.
Saw one FJ with a series of 8 extra holes around the center exhaust hole.  One guy told me he used a tube drill thru the last baffle (not an FJ).

Punching or drilling extra holes in the stock muffler will make it louder.
Whether it will also make it more powerful is open to debate (or dyno).
It may also stuff up your fuel mixture settings.
Proceed with caution.

If I recall, the chamber surrounding the outlet in the FJ muffler is sealed on both ends.  Therefore, if you drill into the plate around the outlet, you will not provide any extra flow.  You would need to use an extra long drill bit to puncture the far end of the chamber to allow flow through it. 

I would say to enjoy the sound of the motor and don't worry about the exhaust.  Every "opened up" exhaust that I've heard sounded like crap.  Really tinny and irritating, almost a constant farting sound.

Stealth mode has it's advantages.  There's enough loud azz bikes out there already.

from my experience's with muffler's is if you stuff with the backing plate or drill holes in it all that will happen is you will lose power  and increase fuel consumption and it will sound like crap .

Thanks for the input.  Must admit, the stock exhaust seems well-designed, with plenty of space over the mufflers for some soft luggage.  Also must admit the carburation seems very good all around, so do not want to go thru a re-jet. 
Still, think this old bike could sound really sweet without being another, obnoxious noise-maker.
Only ridden the bike a couple of hundred miles, but already know this will be a great twisty-road touring mount (but, you probably all know that!).

I've never ridden a stock mufflered FJ, bought mine with a 4-1 on it and a horrible little muffler, nearly 90db at about 2m from exhaust tip at anything over idle. After 15,000km of that I got well tired of it and just bought a very cheap (what can I say I have a mortgage, it comes first  :dash2:) second muffler from a 2007 CB1300... looks great, and sounds better. Look at the difference between them!

There is some performance difference between the 2, but barely noticable and lets face it, the FJ has bags of torque to make up for it. I would imagine you could pick up something very cheaply that will give it a little bark with it's bite.. Lots of guys ditch their standard 2 cans in favour of a single muffler system, must be something out there on ebay or your local equivalent that can be massaged or tickled to fit.
