I'm retrieving my '86 from the mechanical fellow...all ready to certify, except the battery is discharging due to a wiring fault somewhere..he's giving up and sending it home.  Already put more money into it than it would resell for..not sure where to go from here.  My auto mechanic said he'd trouble shoot it with an electrical meter..he's not free...I think the electrical system is the victim of too many backyard fixes over the years.  The clue would be the house wire running under the seat with household marettes on each end..The kick stand switch has been replaced, ignition, and neutral sensor..new tire, new chain, new throttle cables, new fuel petcock.  I guess the electrics get pretty hot if the bike gets run..doesn't sound good..the question is, is it lethal?

From your description I would suggest buying a complete wiring harness. They are not that hard to replace, the connectors only plug in one way so it's almost fool proof, even a cave man could do it. A used harness can be had for around $50. or less.
Also, if you have to make a spice or repair a wire, please solder it don't just twist the wires together like a jackleg and use the correct gauge (same size) wire.
