How long can FJ1200 sit still while idling

I've done a fair amount of car repair but no motorcycles. I'm working on a Legends race car that has a Yamaha FJ1200 engine. There is no cooling fan except on the oil cooler. How long can the car sit still with the engine idling? Will it overheat? Do I need to use an external fan while tuning the engine? This is not mentioned in the Clymer service manual that I'm using.

Mine starts getting hot after ~15 minutes idling in traffic......  it starts burning off the oil from the (since replaced) leaky valve cover grommets. Don't know the actual temp, but she was pinging pretty bad when we got moving again...

For those that forget or those that are recent members, I cooked mine in 42C temp. and gridlocked  traffic.  It cost me $1300 in parts and that's doing the work myself ( except for the re-bore ) and there are horrible things going on inside your engine long before it gets to that stage. They get hot very quickly when not moving.

Yeah, "Air-Cooled" motors work best when the air around them isn't super hot traffic exhaust and 140 degree asphalt temps in the summer.

I found that when I switched to a good synthetic oil from dino the bike was much better able to tolerate sitting in hot temps; Last fall I unfortunately had to put that to the test, getting stuck in 100 degree traffic in Viriginia Beach for about 30 minutes.  I was shocked that it never started pinging.  I'm sure that I would have been close to cooking the motor were I still running dyno.  But a good oil and even a larger oil cool definitely have their limits.  I make a point of avoiding known areas of congestion because not only is it unpleasant and hot, its potentially a ride ender if the mill gets too hot.

I guess my take on it is to not even take the chance of cooking your motor. You can pick up one of those squirrel cage fans used to dry out carpet and such like for not a whole lot of money. Just my .02

Yes, you need to use an external fan.

:hi: Hi at moment i,m working on this very problem on the fj1200 bike, What i,m working with a simple thing dosen`t draw much battery power to use it,s called a computer turbo fan. The breeze that comes from it could dry your hair if you had any  :rofl: but seriosly small compact and forces the air through. I`ll let you know how i get on my plan is to use 2 of these, but someone ticking over on a grid witha covered in ir cooled engine i think this would be just the ticket for you :bye: hairless
