1989 dumping fuel

My 1989 is dumping fuel out of all four carb lines if it sits overnight on the center stand. I had the carbs gone thru and complete tune. It runs great but if more than 1/4 tank on the center stand over night the tank empties thru the carbs on the ground. There is no manual fuel shut off and only a electrical switch for reserve. My first FJ,previously had two 83 Seca 900 and loved them so figured the FJ was next bike to own. Appreciate the help.   Tim

You've got a fuel pump, fuel shouldn't be leaking past the pump.  Unless you've bypassed the pump?

A slow leak from the 4 small hoses usually means the o-rings that seal the needle seats are shot. Get a carb rebuild kit from Randy.

There is a manual shutoff (petcock) under the tank.

Carbs have been rebuilt and trust me there is no manual shut off under tank. I am thinking about adding one well my mechanic is going to. Even he cant figure out why but thinks there is something wrong electronically with fuel cut over switch for reserve? This is his first FJ to work on also as he mainly does BMW's and Harleys. Bike does have 60k plus on her but runs so smooth and still has lots of pull.

So there is no petcock under the tank?  If not, how is fuel delivered from the tank to the carbs?  There's "supposed" to be an ON/OFF petcock under the tank.

The pump models have a "simulated reserve function."  When you get low on fuel, the electronics cuts power to the fuel pump so you run out of fuel.  When you feel the engine start missing, you "switch" to reserve and power is restored to the pump.

Most just run in the reserve position and monitor fuel mileage using the gauge and odometer.  At least that's what works best for me.

I have other kits that include new needle & seat assemblies as well in case they are worn out.

The fuel is supposed to be stopped by the fuel pump first and then by the needle and seat. If the fuel is leaking out of the four small black hoses then the bowls are over filling and draining through the fuel enrichment vent hoses (choke).

The carbs need to have the correct metric o-rings and good sealing needle & seats. This is a common FJ issue and if you look through the files and search sections for carb leaking you will find a ton of info.

Thanks for the information Randy and I have passed it on to my guy and see what he says. Something tells me I might be looking for a new mechanic but hope not. Like riding the FJ but right now it's not going so well and only have to 3 rides in the past 2 months with all the issues with gas.
