There is a vin number on the right side top frame rail hiding just under the inner fairing cover, may have been painted over,as its stamped into the frame .
:greeting:
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

84 Fj1100  effie , with mods
( 88 ) Fj 1200  fairly standard , + blue spots
84 Fj1100 absolutely stock standard, now more stock , fitted with Fj12 twin system , no rusted headers for this felicity jayne

OK lets make this simple. Take a look at your pink slip (or what ever paper work they have down there) it should be on it somewhere. As for the engine # right above the clutch cover (right side) there is a number stamped into the case unless the engine has been changed at sometime or another.

And fore forks look like they are off a 89 or later seeing that they have no anti dive provisions

That does not necessarily help.  I but a "1984" FJ from a dealer in Denver.  Registered in CO, then GA, then PA.  Turns out, it was actually a 1885!  A lister, back on the yahoo site pointed out that based on my particular color scheme, it could NOT be a 1894, or at least if it was, someone had replaced all the plastics. This was not the case, I did have a 1985, but three separate states allowed incorrect year registration.

That may be a way to tell your year based on color scheme. If it's  an 1100, it may be that your paint scheme was only either 84 or an 85.  Post a pic, someone here may be able to tell you.

Your 1985 deduction sounds about right, especially if you are in the US. In actual fact, there IS a 1988 model, but it was not exported to the US. I know as I have one. The colour scheme and some other minor changes are also evident. Mine was built in september of 1988 and clearly states so on the tag as per Australian regulations. It is not much different from the 1987 and 1999 models, but can be a pain in the arse when trying to find parts.

@ Richard if that is true that i have an 88 model 1100 then i would be very surprised I actually come from south africa. and as Dan said the slips are unreliable to be honest nowhere on my slips does it say my manufacture year. also there is only a 9 digit engine number no 17 digit number. the only useful thing my papers tell me is the bike was first registered in 2003, which i highly doubt. I was gonna ask the previous owner but he died in a honda accident so no luck there

also my license disk says my bike weighs 360kgs (about 770 pounds which is also highly unlikely as that 100 kg more than a normal fj and also i lifted the bike and it doesnt feel THAT heavy)
