Hi all. Just wondering who has or is using which make and model to upgrade from the 16's??? I've heard so many things would like to hear some suggestions?? Thanx all.. :mail1:

I used a 1990 GSXR wheel and brake on my FJ.  Just the rear only as the 1990 has a 17 inch front already.  However, the front is only 3 inches wide and would benefit from a 3.5 front.  Pretty easy mod.  There are a couple of options, just look in the file sections.

If you use a 17 inch Yamaha rear, there is machining to do, which is an added expense.  But some here insist their bikes stay all Yamaha.  The GSXR option is a bolt on option just requiring some spacers at each end of the wheel pack.

With tire and new brake pads, it shouldn't cost more that around $350 to do the GSXR rear wheel swap.  If you do go with the GSXR option, try to get all the donor parts from the same bike.  Tha'll make the job easier.

Good luck,

CraigO

Thanks for advice, I was planning on using the gixxer wheel. I have an import 88, both are 16's, have't seen anything but an R1 fork conversion, are you aware of anything else?? Cheers, safe riding.

Easiest and least expensive way to go to a 17" front wheel is to get a set of forks, wheel, and calipers off a 1989 or newer FJ and install them on your 88.  Another mod I have seen is the FZR1000 front end with the USD forks.  Nice mod but requires more time and money than I would spend.

Take a look at the gallery and see what mods look good to you.  Then a trip to the files section to see if there is a write up on how they did it.  There are also many threads from the past that touch on the subject.

You should also introduce yourself in the intro section.  Tell us what your riding, how long you've owned the bike and maybe some history on yourself.

Cheers,

Used a 92 GSXR 1100 rear for my 88. Just about bolts right on all I need was 6 S/S washers for spacers.

Can e-mail pix if you need..

There's an incredible amount of information for various rear swaps available on this site, including a specific list someplace of which gsxr wheels work and what size they run.
