Vista-Cruise Throttle lock mods for my 92 Fj1200

Due to a recent post on this subject on another forum, one of my few remaining brain cells sparked up and remembered that  I had bought one years back and had never installed it. This mod has been done to work on my 92 FJ1200.

I had at the time downloaded Chris Vollmers instructions and those on the FJR forum but was unhappy with both and I presume this is why I didn't install it when I got it.

So yesterday with dremel in hand I set about modifying to my liking, the main gripe I had was that all the instructions suggest nasty unsightly mods to the rubber hand grips something I find distasteful and the mod to allow the unit to be screwed to the twist grip housing was not optimal.

So better or worse here is my version;

With the dremel I removed quite a bit of plastic to allow free movement of the rubber grips.



You can see the extra space if you look carefully.



I decided as well as reducing the lip, I would create a relief to butt up against the ridge on the twist grip housing



I was also unhappy with the void this would leave between the cruise control and the housing so I made a spacer from plastic card and fettled to suit and painted it black




From there it was pretty much follow the instructions from the other two sources to create the hole and recess for the mounting screw



and mount it




I have not put my heated grip back on as I want to see how things go for a few hundred K's as at the moment I am not very happy with the result, not of my work but the product in general, I may end up removing it, time will tell

Don't under-estimate the value of that little Throttle Rocker on end of the throttle.  This is similar to the 'Cramp Buster' just mentioned.  I have one on the Gixxer, and it makes a big difference on long rides.  And I don't think anyone would disagree with the statement that the Gixxer is inherently crueler, ergonomically than the FJ.  Anyway, just the weight of your wrist will operate the throttle and the ability to completely relax your fingers helps much more than you might think. 

Funny thing is it makes you bike feel faster until you get used to it.  As part of that, do be aware, be cautious if you use one of these.  As I first got to using it, there were a couple of times that I thought the throttle was closed, but in fact, it was not; a bit dangerous.  You really need to explicitly raise your wrist, -not just let the throttle roll off naturally.  Once you've trained yourself at that, it is a great little $15, addition.  It's on and off the bike in seconds too, attaches simply with Velcro.

Last point; don't leave it on the bike if anyone else rides it, for the reason mentioned above.

I had the Throttlemeister bar-end replacement style cruise control setup on the CBR1000 -paid like $130 for them.  I did not like them, they were expensive, and I never did get them dialed in so that they would A) not affect normal, non-actuated throttle operation, but still B) hold firm, and not slip when trying to leave my hand completely off the bar for any time.  They say there is a happy middle ground in there, but despite trying +/- 5 times, I never found it.  I did get to the point where it would hold for 10 or 15 seconds before slipping, but I expected better, especially for the money.

I absolutely love my Throttlemeister.  It did take a few tries to get the right insert in there- but mine works perfectly; holds the throttle open but can be easily shut off without having to undo the mechanism.  I am worried that I won't be able to adapt it to the new handle bars required for the front end mod I am doing....

For me it is worth every cent.  I think mine was closer to $140 all in...
