Import duty, GST on engines and parts

Okay I'm looking at bringing in some second hand engines and parts from Germany - in particular to start with - 1 ooohh soo sweeet 300 km old XJR 1250 SP engine.

So I've been reading the Australian customs website trying to figure where things are at now in 2010 in relation to import duty and taxes....

It seems the first "cut-off" point is the $1000 dollar mark, where if the value is below this then no import declaration is necessary....

Then for above this $1000 level - in "whole engine price" territory, the import duty was reduced from 10 down to 5% for "passenger vehicle parts" upon implementation of the latest international trade agreements in January 2010.... But different rates seem to apply for different countries of origin... Add to this the engine is slightly accident damaged so does that make a difference?

I'm just trying to calculate a total landed cost before I commit to the purchase and haven't had opportunity to contact a broker this week.

Any input from the guys who have experience with getting stuff into Oz from the US or EU who can help fill in my knowledge gap would be greatly appreciated....

Victor.
