Scale Running Model Harley Panhead Engine by Ron Colonna
Very cool, but lots of fiddling with it to keeping it at idle......Maybe that is why they gun the throttle when they stop...Could we have them all wrong? Maybe they just sound loud cuz they stall so easy? :bomb:
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Kopfjaeger

thats a nice bit of work but..... wonder if he cast the barrells himself? lot of work to mill all that out.....

Travis398

You can tell he did an excellent job recreating it. Right down to the last detail.

It ran like shit  (popcorn)

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

I really liked that, but if he keeps it running like that pretty soon it'll need a new "cam."  (meaning bore & hone, rings, pistons, bearings, valves, seals, lot and lots of oil.)

Wouldn't it be cool if he built a scale model chopper to put it in.  I figure a bike that size would be about right for the average size Australian.

Pat Conlon

WTF no electric start? Oh yea, it's a Panhead... Ya gotta admire Ron's attention to detail and effort. Kudos to him.

He better get some air moving across those cooling fins or he will cook that #2 exhaust valve, same way all Harleys in the past, have done in summer stop and go traffic....

Isn't that second engine a copy of the old Ed Winfield (?) NOVI that Andy Granatelli ran at Indy?

That is an Offy, right down to the right angle drive magneto; http://tinyurl.com/49ecdze It was used in many cars at Indy for many years and was a staple in the dirt track racing world as well.

The other one is a "Ardun" Hemi conversion for the flat head ford. It has the high mount generator and twin water pumps; http://www.ardun.com/

You're on the right track, David... the NOVI was a V-8, IIRC

The second is a mini-Offenhauser.

Dang, completely forgot about the Offy.  I remember the sound on one over the radio back in the '60s and 70's (when the Indy 500 TV broadcast was delayed by a week or more).

I suppose you heard them in person, Randy(s)?

My ancient dirt memories are the screaming whine of a straight 6.

I did hear a few Offys run at IMS near the end of their heyday.  The Cosworths were coming on pretty fast.

Missed out on the Granitelli turbines, though...

Dad said the Novis made an eerie sound when they ran there.
