Front preload adjustment

My last 2 bikes were easy for setting the preload on the front forks.  On my nused 1992 FJ1200, everywhere I read it says to remove the rubber caps and use a screw driver.  Well I am baffled, and this is probably simple, but my bike has metal caps/nuts on the fork tops.  Are these just covers for the adjustments and I can remove them without issue to adjust the preload?  or does my bike not have preload for the front forks?  Any help would be great.  Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that Yamaha made two types of fork caps. One has a flat plastic insert that pops off to adj. the preload and rebound and the other has a cap that is raised and has a hex top to it.

After closer observation I've been NEWB'd!  The caps are grey like the nuts.  Sigh.  Thanks!    :dash2:

On the late model FJ's with stock forks the only adjustment to be made is spring preload. Remove the grey rubber caps on the top of the fork inside is a slot where you use a screwdriver to turn up or down the spring preload. IIRC they have 3 or 4 levels of preload, to increase the spring amount push down and turn clockwise to the next lower setting. To lesson the spring amount push down and turn the slot counterclockwise.

I have never seen a late model set of forks with metal fork caps..
