weird idile and bogging

I have a few issues with the way my 93 1200 is running.  2 main things, It sputters and almost stalls when I blip the throttle quick. Second thing, when fully warm and especially when it is hot out, the engine will stay idling around 2-2.5 K when I stop at a light or something.

Things to consider: I live at over 7,000 ft elevation (2133 Meters), running a stock replacement K&N, stock headers and exhaust. Don't know if it has been jetted for this altitude, previous owner didn't know.

Andy was terse; he could have reminded you more gently that the answers may be found with a little searching.  To Marsh's point, you can ask again and others will likely answer questions that have been previously answered, we're a friendly lot. 

But Andy's response was informative, he did the search, and provided links even, and gave you his search criteria.  Really the only thing 'lame' or 'rude' was a mildly sarcastic "Good job with the searching." and arguably, "Life is tough".  Neither of these, in the context of actually providing help, seems deserving of "suck it".  Net net, I think you both ought to lighten up a bit. 

I came to this list from the Yahoo list, I don't go there anymore.  It got mean-spirited and no fun.  Too much noise, and not enough signal.  In my mind, "suck it" it fairly noisy.  Last point, if you were to consider your forum citizenship a privilege, not a right, you'd probably do better around here.

Take all this for what's it worth, read: possibly very little/ nothing.

"p.s. rude people with lame comments can suck it"   ...kinda ballsy for a newb but...addressed above so i wont ...anyway,it has been my experience, and that of many, that 98% of the time  the issues you describe will be a carb/fueling problem. Being you have a pipe and uni filters,and uncertain of jetting you would be well served to get a complete jet kit....pilots,mains,needles and instruction on settings.  "factory pro" seems to get the nod as the best. I have a "dyna-Jet" kit.. it works fine ...instructions clear and not so hard to do. As stated you are at high elevation so you would need to jet on the lean side.  good luck.
89 FJ1200 saphire.blu owned 8-9 years.  By far the most satisfying of them all. Constant tinkering got me the best bike you could ever want.

I had a similar problem which turned out to be the air screws on the top front of the carbs.  One was just sitting on it's threads and the others were not even close.  I did a ghetto adjustment by un screwing all of them then turned them down a half turn at a time till she started idling in spec.  Then I had a buddy sync them w/ his carb stick.  Works great now.

Or, save your self a bit of labor and just buy a set from "oldschoolcarbs" on ebay.  $350 and they are bolt on.  Still might have to do something w/ the jetting due to the pipe and filter set up you have.

That is an indication the idle circuit is running lean. Plugged pilot jets, incorrect low speed fuel adjustment, sync issues.

and I agree with Randy you could have your carb sync off, and it wouldn't hurt to check your jetting to see if it is stock or not and make sure things are clean.

Here's something else to consider.

If an engine is running (or idling) okay and you just dump in more fuel, it will blubber to a stop.

If you just let in more air, then it will rev up.  Check for an air leak, or a sticking throttle cable.

Start with finding out what's in there.  It may be jetted properly, but something's dirty.  Has it always done this, is this new, has it been sitting, do the plugs look unusual, etc?  The most telling question may be "how old is the gas you're using?".  If you just switched to a different fuel, or are in an area that seasonally changes their fuel mixture, you may experience some issues.  Did you recently get this machine, or have you had it awhile... has it ever run well for you?  Does it do either of these things with the choke on?

Have you done a blip test on it, if so what did it act like?

Being that you're at altitude, you may assume that you'll need to be running about two sizes smaller main jets than what someone at sea level would suggest, so factor that in when you are looking for folks with comparable setups.

You're going to have to pull the carbs down and check things, but likely you would be best served by starting with a carb synch, as that can cause some of the latter symptom that you describe.  Basically, start off with a known set of clean carbs and knowing what your jetting is will make things much easier whe it comes time to begin making tuning adjustments.  (Change your plugs while you're at it, so you'll have a clean basis to read from.)  I'm personally guessing that Randy's right--a good cleaning and a synch will get you quite a bit ahead, and you can figure out where your basline settings currently are.

ps, the search function is awesome for a number of spec questions here, and a manual is an absolutely invaluable resource, but it's not quite as useful on tuning questions like this one. :)
