Ebay carb kits alright?

The FJ I have just acquired has been sitting for a while. She starts right up but the minute you twist the throttle even a little bit it dies.
I am going to take out the carbs and give them a good cleaning. Are the carb kits i'm seeing on ebay worth it? they run about $50 and include orings, gaskets, float needle and seat assembly. Everything on the bike is stock so I wont be needing a jet kit, at least i dont think so.
any input is greatly appreciated as I have never tinkered with these bikes before.

oh yea, i just received my morgan carbtune and colortune to take care of that end of things.

Honestly, not really worth it to me.

Get the assorted o-rings that you'll need, and give them a cleaning.  The only other things that you'll come up short on then will be possibly the float needles, but you'll inspect those while you're cleaning anyhow.

Depending on the year, the FJ carbs have different float seats (fuel pump vs non-fuel pump, I think is the major difference), so if it works on all, then odds are they're wrong, y`know?

thanks for the feedback, i'll hold off on that. Is there any place you know of to get the orings from? with part numbers and such?
I have a '90, does it have a fuel pump? I notice that when i turn the key to the on position something in the tank makes clicking noises, could that be a fading pump?

There's a pdf on cleaning the carbs and one thread has information on how to obtain an all stainless steel carb screw/bolt kit and all necessary o-rings.  Buy the kit, and follow the directions on cleaning the carbs.  :)

Clicking sound is normal.  Just the fuel pump making sure the float bowls are full.

Clicking from the pump is normal.  In fact, if you turn the key on, wait 5s, it should stop.  Turn the key off, turn the key on, wait 5s.  Repeat a few times.  The clicking should slow down and eventually stop as the pump gets the carbs full.  Otherwise it'll keep going and you'll have a puddle of fuel around your ankles.  If that happens, you either have a float needle that is not sealing, a float seat o`ring that is leaking, or a float stuck in the down position.  None of which is a major problem, and all is quite fixable.

As a note, when you first put the carbs back on the bike and do this, it's very common for a float to get stuck down (open), leading to a puddle.  Whack at them lightly with a bit of a stick and a hammer, gently, and you can unstick them.  Do be aware that at worst you'll fill the cylinder with gas and be possibly facing hydrolock, so if you do not hear the fuel pump slowing as it's clicking after the third or fourth repetition, it's probably time to stop and start looking to see where fuel is going.

On a 90, pull the seat and the right hand rear cover (3' long plastic thing, snaps in).  Under the front of where the seat was, you'll find a metal/rust colored cylinder about 2.5"x6" thing with wires out one end and hoses out the other, that is the pump.  You'll be able to feel it vibrate in time with the clicking noise.

I used the Keyster KY-0560 kits and was very satisfied with the quality of the parts and the completeness of the kit. They are made in Japan to OEM specs. I bought mine from an outfit in Canada that lists them on eBay, saved a few dollars by ordering them from the website rather than eBay.

The ebay kits are ok but your problem sounds like stopped up pilot jets. When the carbs set up and dry out inside the float bowls, the drying fuel gums up the tiny hole in the pilot jet causing a lean condition right of idle. It is beat to not try to clean them but replace them.

I just got some orings from Mcmaster-Carr..... PM me your mailing address and I'll send you a set.  I got the Needle seat, fuel xfer, and mixture screw orings.
