ABS Question

Was wondering if ABS was standard equipment in 1993 for North American models (Canadian) to be exact? I read an article once that stated this feature was standard that year but I think it was a U.S. publication. I'm looking at buying a 1993 and it doesn't have ABS according to the seller but haven't seen it in person yet, just wondering if it may be a 1992 and it's advertised incorrectly...

Depends on whether they are basing it on its build date or its colour scheme.

My 91 is a 91 even though it has a late '90 build date.

I know its a '91 because of the colour scheme........OH and obviously because its a gen4 model with rubber mount engine, and bent box headlight instead of square.

I can't answer whether ABS was standard on your model.......maybe Yamaha Canada specifically only ordered ABS models exclusively that year as a marketing idea.....who knows.

But the Original colour scheme is the best identification I can think of...... and if its not wearing its OEM paint, its not that big a deal for a gen4 bike anyway, as nothing much changed after they perfected the FJ starting in '91.....  :rofl2: :rofl2:

Thanks Harvey, I'm going to take a look at it hopefully tomorrow and let you all know what I find.  I have an '84 and would now like a 4th gen because of all the improvements for long trips.
There's actually two I'm interested in: a '93 with ABS with 76000 km/s (47,000 miles) that's all stock and the other 93? with 93000 km/s (58000) miles with R6 or R1 brakes (not sure), Corbin seat and Givi top box.  Both have been well maintained so we'll see who has the best bang for the buck I guess...

Are these bikes considered high mileage in your opinion?

Ganboy,

No, they're not very high milage bikes.  There are some FJ's on the list with over 200,000 kms and still running well.  My '91 has about 125,000 kms and its still strong and reliable.
The R1 and R6 brakes are the same units (may be a color change of the 'dots').
If I were offered the choice between the ones you've described, I'd pick the one with the uprated brakes, the topbox, and the corbin unless you're especially long of leg. JMO though.

You'll very likely be happy with either.

Cheers,
Arnie

Don't know for sure. Come to think about it, all the '93's I've seen have been the ABS versions. My '92 is a a non-ABS version. Pat

As I read the Yamaha USA parts fische, there was four versions of the 92 bike:

FJ1200D (non-abs 49state bike)
FJ1200DC (non-abs California bike)
FJ1200AD (ABS 49state bike)
FJ1200ADC (ABS CA bike)

In 1993, there were just two.

FJ1200AE
FJ1200AEC

The C probably distinguishes the Ca bike.  The E is probably the letter after the D of the prior year.  The 91 version was not offered with ABS it seems, and the models are designated FJ1200B and FJ1200BC; probably because they skipped using the letter "c" for year as to avoid confusion with the CA and 49 state bikes.

Thanks everyone...so an update.  I drove 150km/s to take a look at the 1992 no ABS, it was a show stopper for me.  Only had 3 owners since '92 - Ran really well, shifted fine, may need a clutch but we'll see: 92,765 km/s, Corbin, R6 blue-dot (stock master), givi top box with light, givi windshield and stock one, givi handlebar warmers, good Metzler's front and rear, original tool kit, 2 keys, Clymer.  All for $1800 as is - he was asking $2500 so I just simply asked his bottom line, yup ok that's fair.  Was maintained by a local Yamaha dealer that even had the good heart to charge him $900 for a carb clean two years ago...

...But wait there's more!! This doesn't usually happen to me but I feel like I was in the right place for sure here...He threw in a really nice less than one year old Shoei hemet, jacket, pants and sets of gloves!  I paused and asked him what's the catch here, is there something you're not telling me about the bike?  Nope just done with riding and moving on to the other things and you seem like the right person for all of this.  Yup okay, here's $200 until I return to pick it up next week.  Seems a bit good to be true but hey makes me feel good that I landed so there.

I'll post some pics after I pick it up. So far just looks like a v/c gasket and a really good cleaning from sitting for 2 years in heated storage.

Time for a beer and thanks for listening.  :good2:
