Hello Gents,

I just found this site and want to congrats everyone here on owning - or being interested in - one of the greatest motorcycles every made.  I own a 1984 first year production fj1100 which I bought <stole> from a local person posting an ad on craiglist stating - 'nice bike, older, too fast for me' - for $1200 cash.   I saw it and was like OMG - never seen, heard of, or ridden one before but it was love at first sight.  Since then, I have had it for over 3 years now and can say without question its the finest bike I have ever owned (out of many).  I am 40 and ride this thing as a daily commuter and all over the state of Nevada and California - rides to Vegas, San Francisco, San Diego, Salt Lake, even around town and around the Lake Tahoe area  - never a dull moment nor problem and with absolute joy on my face every time.  This motorcycle is amazing.  I do have the 2nd gear problem, but have learned to live with it.  It has everything you could ask for : power (you know what I mean), comfort, rock solid handling, and still looks bitchin even against todays rockets.  My best friend rides a 2006 R1 and I have little problem hanging with him (until about 140 or so :-) which is fast enough for me) and even he and his street fighter friends are always complimenting me on what a great bike this is - especially when they ride it.  I don't embarrass them by telling them what I paid for it :-).   I cannot stress enough that this bike was way before its time and will probably never be matched in terms of all around incredibleness (sp?) and longevity.  Enjoy and keep her on the road!

Happy trails.

Welcome -Cary is it?  Good group here that shares your respect for the machine.  Second gear is a big job, but many of the listers here have accomplished it themselves.  I paid a guy $600. to do it myself, while the dealer wanted, interestingly enough, exactly what you paid for your bike...  When/ if you get it done, make sure you undercut the 2nd gear dogs and upgrade to the longer/ stronger shift forks.

Fixing it is like adding back a missing tooth to an otherwise perfect smile.

Cary,

Don't be shy now, tell us what you really think about the FJ :-)
Be hard to find another single bike that does so much so well.

Cheers,

I had an 86 with the 2nd gear issue and I learned to live with it. I just left 2nd before I got to 7k and I was fine.  IF I still had it I might have fixed it on general principle eventually.  Luckily I found an 87 with problem already solved. So yes you can LIVE with it nicely enough.

p.s. If you find yourself in the Sacramento area, there are roughly 4-5 of us willing to ride. I myself am looking forward to a little Tahoe riding action over the grade (is it thawed?)

Red and Silver, clearly the best color combo!   Just ask Paddy or Lee!      :sarcastic:   Welcome aboard.   BUB speed trials at Bonneville on your schedule this year?     Would be wicked kewl to see 4 of the '84s at the same place/time.
