Don't think most of the guys who drag their FJ bother with a damper, so getting feedback may be difficult.  Never have needed one myself, and didn't see one on Chris's machine.

I'd imagine if you found it necessary, you could go from the frame to the lower yoke or so, though.

Not an FJ, but here is how Jon Cain and I mounted an older rotary style damper on my YZF600 race bike. The damper is mounted to the bolt holes originally intended for the brake line splitter on the lower triple and the arm is attached to the factory fairing stay. It works very well and should be easy to adapt to an FJ.

The damper itself is a W.E.R. brand intended for dirt bike applications, but with slightly heavier oil works very well. Last year at Mid Ohio VMD braking into turn 7 (china beach) and heading up toward madness, I was dropping 3 gears and braking hard enough that I could feel the chassis flex and the rear wheel dancing. Never had a seconds problem with head shake, even when the front skipped a few times as the forks flexed and unloaded on the bumps. Conversely i ran the same settings a few months later at the fall rally and hardly notice it at a much slower street pace.

Here is a pic of the mounting:
