I am in the midst of dis assembling an 86 FJ. Available to me at the moment is a complete 2001 R1 swing arm, wheel caliper rotor etc. My question is , does the R1 swingarm assembly bolt up relatively easily ? Is there a link somewhere from a similar mod that I cannot find? There is a front end available as well but..... Any help would be appreciated. I do have a 90 with an FZ1 02 conversion which I really like , and am familiar with all the mods that it required. Is it similar to change to an R1 swingarm or totally different?

Sure, go to the FJ Projects Writeup section, on the top of the second page look at the post by axiom-r titled: 2007 R-1 front and rear end.

Tim did a bitchen job.  Cheers!  (Sorry John, I can't post a link with my iPad )

Thanks Pat. I spent an hour reading axiomr's entire project write-up last week.it inspired me to look outside my comfort zone. My comfort zone is the conversion which I have. A 90 with an FZ1 swing arm, wheel, brake and a Penske shock with XJR cover, offset sprocket etc. Seeing how much work and effort he put into his (axiom) bike is inspiring. My concern is that the 2001 swing arm is completely different to the 07 he used and I need some guidance as to the scope of the project. If there is a lot of machining etc. needed. I do have access to a reasonably priced machine shop, ( a friends father rebuilds old Model A and T Ford motors ). However I suppose it's mostly 1 fear of the unknown, 2 what info can I glean before hand.

candieandy has been running a first gen R1 arm for a while - check out his picture gallery for some good info.  Also search for info he's posted.  Looking at this picture, the R1 arm looks a lot like the ThunderAce arm with a brace added.

Andrew's bike-

Another nice FJ with an early R1 arm.  Belongs to Andy York - received pic and specs on this bike in 2007 -I blame Andy for being an early carrier of the moditis and severly infecting Frank among others...

One thing I found out trying to fit a 2001 R1 swing arm (on my 85) was that the top of the swing arm would make contact with the 2 rear most mounting supports on the seat sub frame, limiting  full shock travel.
You could re-weld the rear sub frame mounts at a different angle, but then the side panel mounting tabs are altered ..etc...etc...etc...

Thanks Antonn3 Are you talking about the bolt that attaches the muffler? The FZ1 swing arm does the same thing. Changing the exhaust fixed that problem as the mounting point moved allowing the swing arm to not interfere. I will have to keep that in mind as well. How do I look up candieandy's pics and his write-up? Searching the site has proven frustrating for me .

i will tell you that some modification (welding) of the rear suspension pickup points will have to happen to let the R1 swingarm work on an early model.... Andy York. measured his stock linkage angles then welded them in place on the R1 swingarm.   he tried using the stock R1 pickup points and his rear suspension wouldnt even move.

For the picsgo to the Gallery button at the top menu bar.then select Member Galleries.  Then scroll doen ti candieandy

For searching, I dont always get what I expect from the search engine, but click the search button on the menu bar.  Enter candieandy as the author on the right side and R1 or swingarm or other for the search term.

Good luck!
