Looking to buy an 84 fj, want to know how many kilometers one should run before major repairs loom

my 84 1100 has now done 103455 km and it still going strong, no major problems.

I just tripped 70K on my 84 and just put my first clutch in.  These motors (Like many air-cooled mills, which is why I like then so much) are pretty bomb proof, and I would say that unless you (or the previous owner) beat the piss out of one like it was track day everyday, AND was bad about keeping good, fresh oil in it (I use amsoil 10-40 motorcycle synthetic, with fantastic results and triple the life of the dino oil I used to use) there's no reason why you shouldn't see 100K before anything major.  Second gear is the weak point on the early ones, so its entirely possible to find one with low miles that needs that fixed.  Mine is fine (knock wood), but I think that is primarily because the one previous owner just cruised around doing poker runs. He had also changed the gearing to 17/39t, which may or may not have helped with that.  I like to hustle through the twisties, so I almost never bang through first and second like I'm trying to win the drag race.  Like I said, these are very reliable bikes. I'm looking at adding either a Ducati multistrada or a Triumph Tiger to my stable next spring and I hope that they're as reliable as my FJ, but I won't be surprised if they aren't.

Seriously...the FJ can handle *big* miles before serious maintenance is required. Buy it, ride it, then fix it if something goes wrong.

Currently I have ~148k miles on my '84. (original owner)
Common to all early FJ's, I had to do the dreaded 2nd gear shift fork @ 28k back in '86, but other than that, the engine has not been apart. Other than the customary valve adjustments, many oil changes, a couple of sets of carb float needle o rings, new emulsion tubes, clutch spring replaced with Barnett 6 spring PP @ 65k and a rejet with Factory Pro stage 1 jet kit....motor wise, she's all stock. (note I said: motor wise)

Let your engine oil come up to temperature before you enter the kookaloo zone, and the FJ motor will last.

This coming year I think that I'll be ready for a rebuild, my compression is a bit low on #'s 2,3,4

That XJ 1250 cylinder block with new sleeves and those new fangled 84mm light weight Wisecos  are looking tasty....

Btw 60 000 miles on mine ,even tho i've only had it 12 months carnt fault it in the last 5000 miles
