Hello FJ owners and aficionados! My name is Josh, and i'm from the cleveland area. I've been riding for about 20 years... I purchased a 1987 Fj1200 about a week ago. It's a really clean bike, only 7700 miles! It's been sitting most of the last ten years so i had to yank the carbs and clean the sludge out, but she's running pretty well now. The fuel pump seems to be leaking, not alot but a slow drip from the little screen... i know about petcocks but not much about fuel pumps. Any input on it would be helpful. I know this is just the intro area and i'll post this question in the appropriate section as well, just thought i'd put it out there. I look forward to getting to know this bike and learning from the years of experience compiled in this forum.

I don't think the 87 had a fuel pump it is gravity feed fuel to carbs.

Hmmmm. Ok i assumed it was a pump b/c there is no manual shut off and it has an electrical plug coming out that plugs into the wiring harness. I'm not sure though. Guess i'll have to do a lil more research on it. Thanks

Josh, an electrical connection????? from the petcock?......the only connection I know of is the fuel gauge connector.....

and no shutoff? on an 87?......

It sounds like you have a later model tank.

The fuel pump equipped FJs ('88 -> I think), did not have a lever on the petcock......... but there is an 8mm square headed plastic 'tap' which you turn through 90 degrees for tap open and tap closed. I assume it is simply a ball inside with a hole thru the middle.

The fuel level sensor is at the front of the tank and the wiring comes to the back and plugs into the harness near battery.

The petcock has an electrical solenoid to simulate reserve.... NO fuel pump, 88 was the 1st year for pumps.

yep... the 86/7 models had an electrically controlled reserve that would shut off the petcock when a set fuel level was reached.   Flipping the switch on the left inner fairing panel (below the choke knob) cut the power to the petcock and allowed the plunger to open and let fuel flow again.

best thing is to leave it unplugged cause it never did work right even when new.

Thanks to everyone for your help! Electric petcock it is... does anyone know if there are rebuild kits readily available for these? It is still leaking a couple drops here and there, nothing serious but annoying to say the least. I took it apart and the end of the plunger is corroded and somewhat rotten looking. I assume it just isn't making a good seal. As an aside though, wow what a difference since i cleaned the carbs! What a beast!

Fix or replace the petcock without a doubt. Another FJ owners bike burned to the ground with the same problem.
