Video Question...

I have joined the ranks of two-wheeled videographers, along with such noteable auteurs as tRoy and Cecil B. deKlavdy.

Got an Aiptek hi-def camera (helluva deal) with a bar mount, which will require some modification; that shouldn't be a problem as I'm at my folks' place and have access to a full garage and redneck/Kiwi-style "machine shop". No helmet/remote camera, just the digital vid camera itself.

Now the question: What do you guys use for editing software? The cheap-ass stuff that came with the camera is pretty rudimentary...you can create one file from several, crop, burn to DVD, etc., but there's no provision for editing seamlessly (there's a few seconds of black screen between "chapters") and no provision for adding music or narrative. I've got a Pinnacle video suite back home, but it's kinda dated and way too complicated.

So far, I'm pretty happy with the camera, especially for the price ($199 US, 120x zoom, 1080i, 16 MP stills), although I haven't had it on the bike yet and battery life could be better. When  I get it mounted, I'll post up some video of the outstanding riding in central Illinois - cornfield, cornfield, soybean field...turn right...pissant little town...cornfield, cornfield, squashed possum...repeat ad nauseum.

(Actually, that's not fair...there are some pretty nice roads, if you know where to look. Especially for the WeeStrom, which is where the camera is going. Narrow, chewed-up 2-lane, gravel, etc. Not FJ territory...unless, you're me. Right, Randy?)

This is Hardley country. I've been here 3 weeks, and I've see about a gazillion HDs...and only about 6 other brands, two of which were Gold Wings with trailers. All of two sport bikes, one parked and one with the requisite shorts-and-flipflops-clad no-helmet squid aboard. I guess some things are universal...

Shoulda had our heads examined after that ride...      :wacko2:

We did find some nice two track for the d/s bikes, though.

Good times!     :good:

...and those shots are from the GOOD part of the road. After that, it turned into rutted, rocky, one-lane dirt with little rock ledges and shit, and about 30 yards of 1" river gravel, three inches deep, right before it empties back out on the Cherohala. That's Danny Lewis's WeeStrom (mine's identical), my '86, and Randy's '89.

Hey, nobody told me that the "FS" in FS217 on the map stood for "Forestry Service". Now I know.

It's just past the bridge at Bald River Falls if anyone's interested...

Stu,

Movie Maker is no longer included in Windows Vista. Luckily, there looks to be another program in the included software (ArcSoft) that will allow me to do most of what I want. We'll see. Thanks.

Depends on how complicated you want to get.

A couple of good deals on editing software would be Move Edit Pro and AVS Video Editor.

I mostly use Adobe Premiere Pro which isn't the most user friendly program out there.

If your camera charges the battery via the USB port then one idea is to get a 12v to USB adapter.  Then power the camera off the bike.

Turns out that Movie Maker isn't included with Windows Vista...but it's been superceded by "Windows Live Movie Maker", part of the Windows Essentials (yeah, right) package, a so-called free download. I'm gonna give it a try. Excellent suggestion on  the 12v adapter, Bean...the Wee already has a socket wired for a cigarette-lighter style plug.

Eric,

Technically, I haven't been out riding...yet. We're going up to Joliet tomorrow and I'll ride the Wee back down here to do a little exploring this week. Hopefully I'll get back in the groove. :)
