FJ mechanic in San Jose, CA

I just bought a very nice '90 with 8K miles and am delighted...  it appears to have the off-idle lean problem I'm reading about on the forums, but I'm running BG44 through it and giving it a chance to clean up on its own.  If that doesn't work, I'd like to go to an FJ expert locally and get it sorted...  or at least confirmed to be a jetting problem.  it would also be good to have a local mechanic I can trust.

Anyone have experience with an FJ savvy mechanic in San Jose CA or surrounding area?

Thanks in advance,

Frank

Hi Frank,

I'm pretty sure there are some members of this list that have lots of experience with FJ's, and are close to you.
However, many of them are up in Willits, CA for the West Coast Rally this week.
If you don't get any responses in  the next day or so, repeat your request for help next week.

Are you sure your bike has only 8,000 miles?  Many of us do more than that in less than a year.

BTW, The only mechanic you can truly trust is yourself.  The FJ is an easy bike to learn to work on and if YOU are doing the work, you know the mechanic has your best interests at heart.

Cheers,
Arnie

Thanks Arnie.  I will likely do most work myself, but I hate to re-invent the wheel.  The slight stumble was better today, but it was cooler than Saturday when I picked up the bike and rode for some time.  I really noticed the stumble late in the ride when it was 90+ degrees and the bike was warm from going slowly for a half hour or so.

Today I put some 91 from Shell in it and ran a 20mi loop near my house...  twisties and pretty slow going.  Bike was smoother, but still stumbles a bit off idle.  It was 84 today, so the temperature could have also played a role.

Anyway, i'd like to find a mechanic for the occasional sanity check at the minimum.

Sounds to me your carbs have some trash in there. Look in the files section for the best step by step proceedure on carb cleaning by our resident fj carb guru Mr David R... that sure cure your problems....

Sounds like plugged pilot jets to me.  If your bike is stock, get some #40 pilot jets, a David Raforth screw kit, and clean & reassemble.  I'd bet it will all go away.  And yes, Willits will have a few FJs this weekend.  It's less than 200 mi north of San Jose, come on up!
