Hi all,

I have an FZ=1 M/c fitted to my FJ with blue dot calipers. Can anyone recomment a matching clutch M/C as it still has the original FJ one, which obviously doesn't match.........I understand the FZ-1 was a clutch cable.

Thanks

Millietant

Indeed it was, I have a FJR 1300 clutch master that I haven't fitted yet and it looks like a closer match to the FZ1 master, but still not ideal.

The XJR 1300 unit might be closer but I don't have one to hand to check (although I have a friend with a XJR so will ask him to take a photo. Not sure if XJR's were sold where you are.........where are you?

Post up a bit of an intro to yourself and bike, so we know a bit more about you - it helps when people give answers/advice (what model of FJ, which country, modifications etc). :good2:

Oh........and don't forget to add photo's................we all like photo's

Yep, the FJR clutch master is a match to the FZ brake master.
Even the adjustable levers match.

Hi Gents, thanks for the replies. I'll fill in my profile, so apologies for the omission. I live I. The UK and have a 26k, 1989 3CV. It has blue spots fitted, but the factory front M/C was weeping oil from the window, hence the FZ-1 replacement.

A master cylinder off the FZ-1 is what I use on my bike, also with the monoblock calipers.
Have you noticed the difference from your oem 5/8" (16mm) to the smaller piston (14mm) in the FZ-1 m/c?
Much better feel at threshold.

Cheers

Hi, yes, much, much better feel. I've fitted the clutch reservoir. There is a hose stop on the M/C whereas there isn't on the FJ1200 M/C. I've cut it off to allow the correct positioning of the hose. The clutch cut out switch was in the way of the handlebar brackets. I removed the switch and dismantled it to clean (very easy-it was very dirty). There are three terminals. I found the centre one was the spare, so I cut it off. I ground the plastic down where it originally plugged in and filled the switch with electrical grease. I bent the terminals forward at about 45 degrees to allow me to fit the unaltered factory wires (having fitted the wires before installing).

thanks for all the help.

Since you're in the UK, this should be an easy purchase for you.

the FJ series uses a 5/8" clutch master cylinder.

I originally swapped in an FZ master cylinder. It's a 14mm cylinder so it reduces the amount of force to pull the lever. But, it requires much more stroke to move the clutch slave the same amount. What I found on my 89 fj12 is that the clutch would engage and disengage nearly at the grip, even with the lever adjusted to full out. Some are ok with this, but I'm not. It almost made the clutch like a light switch. As soon as I started to release the clutch lever, it would grab immediately. The smaller bore should give you a more fine control over clutch engagement, but the long stroke ruined it on my bike and made it difficult to be smooth on the clutch.

I solved the issue by installing an XJR clutch master. It's virtually identical to the FZ master, including the adjustable lever. It also has a 5/8" bore, so it returns the clutch action to what the oem clutch master had.

I had to order my XJR clutch master from a breaker in the UK, but it should be a doodle for you to pick one up locally for 20-30 quid......
