Hello, I am new to FJ ownership and am starting on the recommissioning of two FJ1100's, a 1984 and 1985.  I am missing the gas cap for the 1984 and realize they are very difficult to find.

Has anyone come up with a workaround solution, using a more readily available cap from an alternative bike?  I am not afraid of a bit of machining and fabrication... if that is required!

Thanks for any assistance!

Currently have a collection of bikes, including a '84 and '85 FJ1100, Norton Commando, a Norton Model 18, a Ducati Pantah, a 500 Moto Morini, a WL45 Harley Davidson, and an R60/2 BMW.  Ongoing car projects are a Triumph TR3A and an MGA.  Plenty to do...

I don't think there's an alternative. Occasionally some NOS would pop out.
There is only a solution to change the internals in your old FJ 1100 cap. I can't remember the model from which they work, but I did it. There is a write-up on it somewhere on forum. If you don't find it, let me know and I'll try to. Use Google to search with 'fjowners.com' in the end.

My notes for my 1984 FJ1100 shows that the "mechanical/guts"  parts from several  Yamaha Virago's are the same as for my FJ.

Specifically, 1983 XV500 Virago and 1990 thru ???  XV535 Virago.

These show up as part # 4X7-24602-05-00.

Now, be aware.......Yamaha changes part numbers fairly often.  The info above was entered into my FJ maintenance log in 2011......so that above p/n could now be different.

Good luck!!!

Saltspring is a nice place to own a bike.  Unfortunately I don't know Al, but his car sounds interesting!

As an update to my gas cap saga, the cap was locked and would not open, despite having a key.  The local locksmith was able to make a new key and get the cap to pop open.  I have cleaned up and rebuild the cap and internals, so I have one working cap that can be swapped between tanks.

Thanks to those who shared links to alternative cap internals, much appreciated!
