Back in march my 85 was making a strange ticking sound  and was running rough until fully warm then ran better but still had a strange
kind of metal on metal sound.
I parked the bike and a couple weeks ago checked valve clearances all were a loos 0.06 or tight 0.06 all except one exhaust valve, it measured a loose 0.88
not good. As i rotate the engine i can see the bucket not coming back up as far as the rest.
I had this back in 1990 with this bike and it was a valve seat had dropped.
So I have dropped the engine out to remove the head and have a look. I also started looking for a replacement head as i don't want to repair a valve seat again if that's the problem again. An old friend had told me about an 86 that was parked in his grandmothers garage for the last 15 years with a broken chain.
Was it running when put there ? Was it complete ?
The answer I got was It has an extended swing arm ,air shiftier and the chain broke and stuck inside the sprocket cove and the oil had leaked out.
sounded interesting.
July 1  Canada Day i show up at grandmas house cash in hand and a U-hall trailer Boost a car in the driveway fill the tires with air. I'm almost in the garage now
we pry open the garage door. a couple of seadoos in a corner and 2 bikes under a tarp and plastic. one was a 1956 norton with a side car. The second a 1986 FJ1200
and there was the chain dragging on the ground and a pail full of oil. But the bike looks good and needs to be remover from granny's garage along with everything else.
$200 dollars later the fj is in the trailer.
Back in my driveway after a good wash and the bike starts to tell it's story.
the rear fender is cut out under the seat , like to make room for the tire ?
the air shifter in gone , I see different coils, mikuni carbs, Earls oil cooler ,and 1/2 tank of 15 year old  gas
but this Thing mounted on the right side of the fairing i have do idea what it is.
There are wires attached that i will trace to see where they go.
once i get the engine out to see what damage the chain did. Then i can pull the cylinder head.
There are a couple of stickers  on the bike from  a race engine shop and a performance bike shop. maybe some goodies are inside that 1200.
seams like over kill on a stock motor
here are a few pics.

Going out on a limb here Bob. This critter was raced - at tracks? Without seeing where the wires go, if I dreamed up a reason to a switch like that up under the throttle it would be as a dead man switch tethered to my wrist. Or just an extra step to complete the running circuit with something conductive slipped in the gap. Are those 2 bullets conductive?
All in all it looks like something from home security systems for a window or a door.
All just guesses. The wire routing will tell if it's intact.

HI Charlie , how are you ?

Thanks  That makes total sense to me. You fall off the bike and the engine stops . Hope I wont be needing that. lol
I know the guy I bought it from said he  rode it a few times but could not remember what that thing was.
It  was his brothers bike. That he   purchased   from someone else that built it and raced it .
Leitner & Bush  built the engine it shows  42,000km  on it .  maybe 1/4 mile at a time

Hey Charlie ,
Looks like you are spot on.
I was looking up the rules at Ontario Race tracks.
Motorcycles  needs a Lanyard Kill Switch if your bike runs 120 mph or 10 second in the 1/4 mile

Thanks
