sigh. i have found something i cant deal with. someone else working on my bike and the nuances that go with it. when i got my tyres changed the mechanic and i got talking and the rattle i have always had he reckons was cam chain.ok. so the next day i go back in and ask to speak to mechanic. informed they dont let people speak to their mechanic. ok. so i bought timing chain new guides and tensioner 700 bucks worth of parts, and new steering stem bearings i bought and gave to them to fit. ITS BEEN 3 DAYS!!!! and thus far all i get out of em is " yes he's still working on it" no information and i find this wierd because i asked themto do a compression test and call me so i can see if it needs new rings etc. not a word. i hate it i hate it i hate it i hate it. someones got their hands in my baby
just hope they do a good job. seems wierd to me aswell that they said they'd change the timing cahin and guides ( apparently if the rear timing guide isnt worn they aint going to replace it , they are talking engine out???? of the frame to do timing chain guides) and then do a compression test. :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head: :scratch_one-s_head:

First of all... it's not the cam chain making noise, it's the starter chain... and yes you gotta pull the engine & split the cases to change either of these chains... it's gonna be weeks before you get your bike back.

sorry :ireful:

well i get it back tomorrow ( today) yes im inclined to agree with you as have just out of curiosity, previously been to a different mechanic  and had him a listen, he said one of my chains is loose its not super bad but it needs to be fixed. the ONLY reason i went for timing chain is to get it done so i know its done, and that what the mechanic ( one who has it now) said that the starter chain is a deeper note  than the rattle i have. and it does sound like its coming from the sort of middle of the middle. right in the centre of the 2-3 rd cylinders with a tikka tikka tikka tikka coming from the 4th  and?? 3rd cyklinders goes away ( the tikka ) when it warms up but also as of late its been soff on power delivery. hard to describe no abnormal noises but soft , doesnt feel like your where you should be when you twist the throttle. so im going to get to those clutch plates soon. find out if its made a difference in 8 hours and 600 bucks later:S:D. just a bummer sorry to whinge.

Why do you trust this mechanic?  Do you actually know that he knows what he's doing?
You've supplied the parts and they're gonna charge you $600 for the labor?  That's only 6-10 hrs depending on the shop.  I guess the work youve described 'could' be done in that time if he is a good mechanic and knows FJ's.  I'd be very careful to check that all the work claimed has been done, and done correctly.  I'd also demand all the replaced parts back.  Check that they're actually used FJ bits too.
The steering head bearings are a bitch to change, and to get the lower race out you usually have to cut it or weld a bar across it.  Check to see how much damage has been done to the race.  If its not damaged, I'd be sus about it being changed at all.
Cynical?  Who me?  Absofuckinglutely!
For your sake, I hope I'm wrong.
I thought you were mechanically competetant.  I guess I didn't see trusting.

It sounds to me like you are describing the typical sounds the FJ engine makes - ear plugs are the least expensive fix...

Have you had your valve clearances checked?  If the sound is really bad - that would be the first thing I'd check...

I have had removing stuck races by laying a hot mig bead on one side for about 1/2 inch. Usually they fall off/out after cooling.

gday springy . yes mate all back together feels good new steering stem bearings and the motor is running beaut if a little high in idle about 1200 rpm or so. was just my paranoia, am eating humble pie, mechanic was good, 400 bucks labour, about 700 in parts , compression all good, carbs checked and balanced. IT TURNS. the mechanic and i both noted that yes the starter chain will need to be done, but its a very quiet quiet rattle. gone totally when warmed up. new rocker cover gasket washers were put on too. And Arnie the only reasons i chose this guy were this. i rang round for a day trying to find slave cylinder seals for the clutch and at he end of the day i rang this mob.
" you rang such and such didnt ya?"
yup
they couldnt find their arse with two hands a map
uh huh
come in i got em same as an fj 1100 .
went in on the wall is a framed factory picture of a yamaha fj 1100 and an fz?? 750.
your right i could have done this myself but im sleeping on a mates couch at the moment and borrowing his garage to store my other gpz 1000 so finding the time and space is pretty hard, i am like yourself and prefer to do it myself  and i dont trust easy but this guy seems good and the service is pretty good two. had my timing chain and guides in from japan in about a week ish. so now im purchasing  a new rear disc and  clutch plates i still got your email about the plates and will probably just do oem and a straight swap then its done i got the gear to do that , but im chatting to this nice kiwi bird and she want s to come for a ride, soooo..... maybe next weekend  :D

take it sleazy

Arnie

Kopfjaeger,

Very pleased for you that my paranoia was misplaced - this time. :-)
Enjoy your riding.

Cheers,
