Replace FJ1100 carbs or replace with XJR1300 carbs?

when i was going through my carb gushing phase i extended the overflow tubes so that they exited well below the exhaust and out of line with the rear tyre, so when they did act up I really didn't care or have to fix them in a hurry, after doing all the cleaning and adjusting stuff i eventually put in a set of fairly new XJR1300 carbs and used it as an excuse for a few dyno runs and a stage 3 kit.

So, rather than trying to resurrect my FJ1100's original carbs that have sat percolating in fuel for 7 years, should I buy a set removed from a FJ1100 that was running nicely only 18 months ago for $250, or should I buy XJR1300 carbs for $190? Are there any issues with installing XJR1300 carbs? Would the rubber inlet tubes from an XJR1300 fit on the FJ1100 motor too? Anyone else done this conversion, and what pros and cons are there?

Hello Nathan, yes the spacing on the XJR carbs (77-85-77) is the same as your FJ carbs (the XJR and FJ cylinder spacing is the same)

I do not know the differences between the XJR carbs and the FJ carbs. The XJR1300 was never imported stateside unfortunately

A good question for Randy.

Fuel pump vs gravity feed, they will bolt up you may need to change needle seat or drill out the new seat, and go from a larger fuel line to a smaller one. I did sell a new set to someone a few years back and he never had any issues. You'll still need to jet to make run right like all FJ or XJR carbs.

Sorry, I missed this earlier.

The xjr1300 is also a gravity feed bike like just like the fj1100.

So other than jetting difference, they are the same.

I don't think they are the same.

They have some kind of connector/sensor on the side:

1985 - Yamaha FJ1100 36Y
1978 - Yamaha SR500
1983 - Kawasaki GPZ550 (sold)
1977 - Kawasaki Z400 (sold)

There are basicly 2 types the bsr 36 and bsr37 the latest xjr1300 had the 37mm carbs I know ive got 2 of them they are easy to recognize the 36 looks and builts as long as the fj carb. The 37 has Black plastic spring covers and built shorter both have tps on the side the needle are 2.5 mm instead of 3 with the fj.
Stock has 98 jets. I run with 128

OK. The xjr carbs that we use are 36. Both Randy and I sell brand new legend carbs. They are 36mm fuel pump models, no switches, nothing diff but the color of the tops. I've sold 10+ sets of xjr carbs in last few years and never had anyone say they didn't fit or work.

It's a throttle position sensor and you can throw it away.

Bob, the carbs we get here in the US are car specific and are for the fuel pump application.

The stock XJR motorcycle does not use a fuel pump and are gravity feed.

If the carbs are metal top carbs then they are 36mm and gravity feed. If they have the black plastic tops, then they are 37mm and still gravity feed.

Yes, the XJR does use a TPS on the side of the carbs, but that can be left there or removed if required and the carbs will still function properly as there is no electronics on the 84 that work with the carbs.
