Morning all.  I'm about to start the popular "gsxr750 wheel swop". It's for an 89 3cv. All i need to know is what wheels I need! 85-90 is the oil cooled "m" designation,  91 to 95 are the "wn to ws" water cooled ones. Any advice is most welcome.

In the other write up in the Files section there is a list of possible donors/

The pdf is at the bottom (unfortunately the links for pics in the pdf don't work anymore)

Bones

They don't have to be a 750 only, 1100 rims fit as well as RF 900 Suzuki , the main difference is some sprocket carriers have five bolts and some have six bolts. 91 to 95 are the ones to look out for as they are 5.5" wide and have the bent spoke pattern like the FJ so look factory. 88/89 have the bent spoke pattern as well but are only 4.5" wide so a 160/70/17 tyre is the proper size for that rim if your looking for the fat arse rear look. Some later model GSXR rims fit but have straight spokes so don't match the front wheel and don't look factory. A 5.5" rim takes a 180/55/17 tyre standard but a 190 will fit just keep an eye on chain/tyre clearance.

Too young to be old but old enough to know better.

That's great. Just the information I'm looking for.  This gives me something to start working on.  Thanks so much.

I did the 92 GSXR 5.5 wheel on my 86' and then moved it over to the 89'. I did some bending of the brake stay rod and bolted a stainless bracket under the swing arm. I found it quite easy.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Why are you limiting yourself to the GSXR 750 swap, there are other Suzuki wheels and also other Yamaha wheels (particularly the YZF 600 R (not the YZF R6) Thundercat) that fit and provide you with a 5.5" or 5" width rear wheel, suitable for fitting modern radial tyres in 170/60x17 or 180/55x17 sizes.

Are you open to other options, rather than just the GSXR 750 swap?

'88 FJ 1200 3CV - became a race bike, no longer with us.
'86 FJ 1200 1TX - sold to my boss to finance the '89 3CV I still own.

I have done two GSX-R750 rear wheel swaps and one GSX-R1100  rear wheel swap.

Here is the link with the PDF file with photos in the 1st comment.

For some added info. The 1994-1997 Suzuki RF900 rear wheel is the exact same part number as the 1998 GSX-R1100 rear wheel. This is what I currently have on Casper. I have a 1992 GSX-R750 rear wheel currently on my 1989 FJ Streetfighter 1200.

If you have any questions or get stuck with the instal. Please feel free to ask questions.
