Can you fit a 91-95 engine to a 84-90?

I think so, but you also need to change the removable bottom frame sections. I could also be completely wrong.

1984 FJ1100 Pearlie, stock as.
1985 FJ1100 Mr Effie 647,000K and still running hard.

I've got an 89 motor in my 86 frame.  Had to put a Dynatech ignition system on the bike to get it to work.  All the hardware was the same.

Yes you can. Here is my experience:

I installed a '91+ (no vin on the case to tell exactly what year) 1200 engine into my '85 1100 last year. The front mounts are the same. The rear mounts are different. An '86-89?, like my '85, has a solid UPPER rear mount through bolt and the LOWER rear mounts are rubber mounted. To accommodate the rubber mounts the engine case is machined to accept these rubber bushings. The 91+ 1200 engine rear mounts are rubber mounted UPPER and solid mount LOWER, therefore the engine case is not machined to accept lower mount rubber bushings.

On my install, I reused the solid upper rear mount bolt. For the lower rear mounts, I obviously couldn't use the rubber bushings so I used qty 2, Ø7/16 x 5" lg high strength bolts (one per engine side) and spacer washers between the engine case and frame. In summary, all the rear engine mounts are solid mounted.

I have not experienced any increase in engine vibration. All is well.
I also simply swapped out the 1200's pickup and rotor with those from the 1100 - easy.

Hope this helps,

Rob
