I didn't want to hijack the BMW-service thread, which has morphed into an anti-lock discussion, but I heard this on the CBS Morning News...

Guess I'll keep riding old bikes...

That's okay Rock, I hijacked it all by myself.

The NTSB is fixing the wrong end of the problem.  Maybe motorcycles would "need" ABS if they would BAN CELL PHONES in autos and advocate/educate more driver awareness of motorcycles.

I know, that's about as likely as bipartisan legislation in my lifetime.  HIJACK!

I will have to say I was anti-ABS when I was running the FJ.  Both my FJRs have ABS.  It has saved me twice.  Once will I hit some slush during an unexpected snowfall on the way home from work.  Another, right in front of my house when a deer jumped out in front of me.  When I say it saved me, the ABS engaged for the front wheel.  Can't say for sure if I would have went down.

So the NTSB held a board meeting on 9/11, titled: Safety Report on Select Risk Factors Associated with Causes of Motorcycle Crashes.  You can take a look at their site for the meeitng, but I don't see a lot of meat there to chew on.  No revelations or bold discoveries.

They only looked at accidents in Orange County, CA from 2011 - 2015.  Seems like a very limited perspective.

Here is their specific recommendation related to ABS:

Require all new motorcycles manufactured for on-road use in the United States
be equipped with antilock braking system technology.

Can't wait to test ride a Ruckus with ABS!

I was curious as to whether any research had been done on the effectiveness of ABS with cars/light trucks.  I found this page Mobility Effects Database which gives brief summaries of several reports over the years.  Basically ABS has had nil effect on accident rates involving fatalities. Any pluses with using ABS seem to be negated by the minuses.

Strange. Why? My opinion only, but... people are generally stupid.   Case in point:

ABS only works as intended if you know how to use/drive with it. Same as all the other doo-dads and gadgets they are loading up cars with. The more crap they stuff in the less careful people are because they think the car will take care of it. Like those Darwin Award candidates and their auto driving cars.

My 92 FJ ABS still works and is the second bike I've owned that has it , the first being a 97 BMW R1100GS.  I've had a few occasions where its come in handy, but I wouldn't miss it if I have to remove it when its finally pooched. BTW my Beemer was totaled when a car - parallel to me in the right lane made a left turn while I was in the left lane. My ABS didn't help me there when I tboned him. Lightning strikes sometimes (and deer) and there's little you can do but hope it doesn't hurt so bad.

I'm digressing, but I guess the best way to utilize the ABS is to not have to need to use it at all - by not allowing a situation to develop on the first place - if at all possible.

But the question lingers... If ABS has had nil effect on car fatalities, would it make any difference on bikes?   :scratch_one-s_head:

Paul,
Did you just call me stupid?

BTW, I was supposed to type;  "Maybe motorcycles WOULDN'T need......."
DavidR.

Nope. I was using your quote as an example of the stupid behaviour people have behind wheel. Basically I was agreeing with you  regardless of the would/wouldn't typo.

But if you would like, I would/wouldn't call you stupid.   :mocking:
