Hi, on my 1986, I have high-beam, but no low-beam. I've replaced the bulb, nope, still no low-beam. Has anyone taken the handlebar switch apart? can it be serviced, or should I be looking at wires? I was kind of shocked how flimsy the wire to the lamp is. Thanks

When was the last time the low beam worked?

Before I made it more difficult, or worse, I'd recheck the bulb and check the connector for voltage.

Has a headlight relay mod been installed?

Yep, as Hooli advised, first check the voltage *at the plug*

I burned a connector on my plug.

Pat, I burned one also.  I was running an 80/100W bulb with the relay mod.  The bulb connector "missed" the bulb pin and did not make a good connection when just sitting next to it.

Heat melted the headlight plug and I changed it out for a ceramic plug.  Also went back to a 55/60W bulb.

Yep, I also had the relay mod and the eBay ceramic plug I used didn't have that positive "click" when pressed on the lamp spades (like the oem)
....I didn't think much about it at the time I installed it, but over time and many miles the vibes worked it loose and arc fried the connector.
Ceramic connector mind you...Amazing the power of DC current fed by 10 gauge wires off the battery with 30 amp relays and main fuse.

Now I'm back to the oem harness and LED lights. I get a good positive click on the plastic FJ oem connector.
My theory is that (unlike halogen bulbs) the relay mod isn't much of a benefit on LED lights.
We know it's a huge improvement on halogens....but I think not so much with LED's.

I have a light meter and I've been meaning to take some foot candle readings on my LED powered with and without the relay mod.
