New option for FJ's which do not have Auto-Cancellation turn signals.

One of the many things I enjoy on my '84 is the auto cancellation turn signals. I have become used to this feature.
IIRC Yamaha discontinued, on their entire product line, this auto cancellation feature in '89 ('88?) due to liability issues.

Anyhoo...when riding my '92 I had to consciously remind myself to turn off the signals, no biggie, but the potential of old habits has occurred. A dangerous condition for sure.

Now there is an aftermarket sensor that can be used on FJ's without oem auto cancellation.

It appears the STS is even more advanced than the oem auto cancellation Yamaha system I have on my '84.

Has anyone tried this STS on their FJ? If so, any feedback?

I have always liked the Speed Hut GPS Speedo, Tach and Fuel gauge mods, but I have resisted because I really like the auto cancellation feature on my '84. If I ditch my oem speedo, I ditch the distance sensor that makes the cancellation feature work.

Now with the STS box, I can have both....A GPS speedo and auto cancellation.

For folks who want to keep their oem speedometer but want LED turn signals without the inline resistors (saves energy) you will need a solid state flasher relay.
If you take out your oem reed switch flasher relay, you will lose the auto cancellation feature.
Now you can have both a solid state flasher relay and retain the auto cancellation.

Oh hell, do all four ....GPS speedo, STS box, LEDs and a solid state relay......

This madness has to stop.......help meeeeee! :dash2:

Cheers.  Pat

I have always found self cancelling indicators dangerous. Having blinkers turn off too early or too late is dangerous, and all the current systems do both depending on the traffic situation. I know from previous discussions here many don't share my view of the danger in this.

Pat, I looked at the STS a while back and watched some reviews. The reviewer was very positive and desperate to show they couldn't be fooled but the test ride video showed enough exceptions in fairly straight forward riding that you'd still be checking them every time to be sure.

I like knowing that once my indicator is on, regardless of lane changes, distance or stop duration, it will stay on until I've made my turn. It's not hard to think of scenarios in normal everyday riding where this unit could be fooled.

Having said that, I don't mind a gadget and I considered buying one and leaving my LED tell tale connected as insurance, until I checked the price - $450!!

However, for those that have and like any existing form of self cancelling indicators, these would be a huge step forward and probably work flawlessly 95% if the time.

I guess I'll just stick with this for now.

Very bright LED on a flexible stalk, can't miss it under any conditions.

I do enjoy my self cancellers also, my last bike a Z1300 had them too, so you get to know when to put them on and you don't have to remember to turn them off after a corner or lane change,(I usually manually turn them off in a lane change anyway but)

They don't turn off when you are just sitting there, at least I'm sure they don't.

Pat, there is an alternative. You can get 700 lumen (that's really bright) LED indicator globes with built in resistors. They are plug & play with the standard set up. You can get them in amber or white.

Yes it is, but then that's the idea and that's why it's on a flexible stalk, I just move it to one side a bit if riding any distance in traffic at night (something I try and avoid). Even for daytime use I have it angled slightly.

However it does a foolproof job for $10.

My 1990 has the auto cancellation signal feature.  At first I didn't trust it or perhaps old habits of manually controlling them dies hard.  Over time I have gotten use to using them.  My only complaint is I wish they would cancel faster after making a turn. Seems like they stay blinking for about half a block or more before resetting. Wish the timing was adjustable.

HI Pat,
I have just completed installing the speed hut gauges Gps speedo, tech, fuel/oil temp.
When inside the cluster housing I did not remove the Distance sensor or the rev limiter.
I did have to make up some wiring to relocate the rev limiter flat under the tach.
But there is no connections from the speedo to anything other then the speedometer cable to the front wheel.
Haven't put the fairing back on as of yet so cant go for a ride to see if I still have self cancelling signals or not.
Most of the time after turning I find they stay on to long anyway and turn them off. But its always a nice feature to have.
