Any experience riding a VStrom, compare to FJ

It's an idle question. They are both about 1 liter in displacement and have two tires. That's about where I see the outward similarity ends. I'm a little more familiar with the TL1000S from which the VStrom derives its engine, with tamed cams and tuning.

Anyone had the opportunity to put some time on a VStrom for commenting on how it delivers its "get up and go" in typical situations vs an FJ?
If someone wants to see any images I refer to in posts, first check my gallery here. If no bueno, send me a PM. More than glad to share.

You should ask your questions to the folks over here.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone there used to own an FJ earlier, and moved on from them.

IIRC, Rossi, or one of the guys from the east have both a Vstrom and a FJ...

I've heard they are very nice bikes.

I've got the WeeStrom (DL650, the little one), and Danny Lewis used to have one as well. The guy to talk to about Vee vs. FJ would be Tim Collings (Pocket Bike Tim on this forum). He's owned the 1000 and a later-model FJ. So I can't speak about the big 'Strom. I can say that while the smaller one is a really good do-anything bike, it's a big adjustment to go from one to the other - takes a few miles to adjust to the differences in character and handling.

I owned a V Strom 1000 a few years after I sold my 86 FJ.  The V Strom was quick and would be comparable to an FJ in roll on.  The V Strom engine vibration seemed smoother than my 86 FJ.  For me, the V Strom was more comfortable because of the upright riding position, but it was noticeably taller than an FJ.  Since the V Strom is supposed to be an adventure bike, with extra height and the 19" front wheel, the handling wasn't as quick as an FJ.  As an adventure bike, it would be a handful on anything other than forestry roads, the same roads I would ride an FJ.  The OEM windscreen was terrible with a lot of buffeting.

For maintenance, the V Strom is like a lot of newer bikes.  There's a lot more "stuff" to remove the get the gas tank off and clean the air filter.  There are several forums for the V Strom that are/were pretty helpful.

I really liked the V Strom engine, if they made one with 17" wheels, like a Tiger 1050, I would consider another.
