Hello,
Has anyone ever put a tiny horn or beeper to remind the rider the turn signals are on? Any installation tips or recommendations? I recall years ago someone made a tiny version of the motorcycle horn that would be cool and with a switch once it becomes a habit.

Forgetting the signals on is a good way to invite a car to turn in front of you.  :shok:  Gary

The '86 has auto cancel. The newer FJs don't have this?  :shok: Bad Yamaha...
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Would parts from an 86 bolt on or adapt?

Gary, not that easy. The auto cancel is driven off the odometer with a special signal to the flasher switch.
IOW, the speedometer is involved.

There is on eBay a supplemental light that can be installed that, when flashing, will get your attention.
My '84 has self canceling turn signals and when I ride Paul's '92 I have to remember to turn them off.

Mark, I've been told that Yamaha dropped the auto cancel feature on the late model FJ's due to liability reasons.

Gary,

I make turn signal beepers with three-wire piezo-electric speakers.  Any good electronics parts shop should have them.  One wire is ground, one wire gives steady sound on 12Vdc, and the third wire makes the speaker beep (don't use that wire).  Connect the ground wire, and get a pin-probe going on the "constant-sound" wire.  Probe each pin on the flasher unit while using the turn signals, to find which pin you need on that unit.  I have not done this for the FJ, so you might need two speakers, one left and one right, but one may do for both sides.  On my car, the beeper sounds when the flasher lamp is OFF, and it is silent when the lamp lights up.  This all works just fine, but you might notice the speaker timing is reversed.

Once you know which flasher pins you need, you can simply push the stripped wire ends into the correct female sockets, and install the flasher normally.  The piezo speaker draws very little power, so the wires are very thin.  Mount the speaker where you can hear it, but out of the rain, using zip ties or self-stick Velcro tape.  Larger piezo speakers are louder, usually.  You can throttle down the sound volume of the speaker with a piece of electrical tape over the sound hole(s), and then pierce the tape with a red-hot needle (repeat as needed) to let out the desired level of sound.
Cheers,
Red

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.

Guys,
I came across this product the other day. Since my 1990 FJ had self cancelling and my 1993 doesn't, this caught my eye.

I have no vested interest in the company and have not purchased one of the systems as of yet. Just throwing it out there.
