Remove fuel electrical system

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum but regularly use forums for my car maintenance and repairs.

I have an FJ1200 engine 3CV in an offroad buggy which I've just purchased.  My first task is to take on the wiring as its just a whole FJ wiring loom cable tied into an ice cream tub  :shok: however I helped re-wire my father-in-laws Lotus a few years ago so I have some experience at this and it shouldn't be a problem.

I've started to cut out the stuff I don't need like lighting circuits and lighting switches etc.  However I've been reading up about the fuel tank sender and reserve switch and it seems I'd want to remove all this too as the buggy currently has a temporary fuel tank on it with no sender or reserve system.  So i want to remove the sender electrical cables and the reserve switch cables but I'm not sure if I can simply cut them out so they are always off or if I need to link them out so they are always on?

I'm creating an autocad drawing of my wiring system so I know how it all works. It looks as though a coil relay mod has been added too and I'm not sure it was ever wired correctly.  I bought it knowing it needed commissioning (the sellers words) so its a project.  Once I've completed the drawing I'll post it up here along with a few photos of my electrical birds nest.

Welcome Mibazza, you came to the right place to find your answers. Randy at RPMracingca.com has posted a wiring diagram that works for using an FJ/XJ engine in a car or buggy application. I did a quick search for it with no luck. Perhaps he will have quick access and will post it again. Post up some pics of your project, we love to see what others are doing with their bikes and other FJ based vehicles.

In the back of the Owner's Handbook is the wiring diagram for that specific model.

mibazza,

Our resident FJ guru and forum owner, Randy, has posted the minimum wiring needed to run the FJ engine in a Legends race car.  There are five toggle switches used, 1, 2, 3, IGN, and MASter.  The numbered switches are for accessories. See a copy, attached.

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.

Thanks for warm welcome and great help and advice people.  I'll use that wiring diagram and incorporate it into mine.  It's slightly different to what I have as I think I've got a 1988 UK model (I'm in Scotland) and the wiring diagram you kindly gave me has vacuum advance which I don't have (I think this is the US 1991-on models), but this will work great to help me understand what I do, and don't need.  I'm going to finish off my diagram tonight and get out to the shed tomorrow to wire it up.  I'll take some photos of what it looks like at the moment as hopefully it will look much better once I finish it and I'll document my progress as I go for anyone who may be interested.  I'll start a new topic which I can basically blog on as and when I have updates.  Once again thanks for the warm welcome, I was unsure if I'd get any help since I don't technically have an FJ1200 only the engine!  Cheers.
