Gas Tank Rust Treatment

As recommended by Randy, I'm going to treat my gas tank with POR15. Having a hard time getting all the gas out of the tank. Any suggestions? The wire harness attatched to the bottom of the tank. Does it need to come out? Heat shield would have to be peeled off. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You need to make sure everything is out of the tank.  Leave it sitting in the sun so heat will evaporate any remaining fuel.  I used an expanding rubber plug to seal off the gas cap inlet.  I rolled up tape to use as a plug for the petcock.  You don't want any of the coating to contaminate the threads. 

Just like the fuel, you will have a hard time getting the excess coating out of the tank.  I flipped the tank upside down and elevated the rear part in the air.  This would "pool" any excess coating in the forward upper part of the tank.  That way it would have minimum impact on the amount of fuel the tank can hold.

As we talked about the phone I have not tried it yet for this specific application, but I have used on some old car applications.

FJScott agreed to try this on the tank on Marsh's old FJ. The kream has been coming out of that tank for years and when I go the bike it was no different.

I am still waiting on my kit to arrive, but it looks like POR15 has developed a kit specifically for previously, poorly seal tanks.

Why stop at one? Get a few in every year and color. it offset the cost of the time machine.

After sitting for 10 years my tank had a severe rust problem. I wound up taking it to a guy who specializes in gas tanks. He had a machine that looked like a miniature carnival ride, you know the one with three rings that twists and turns you in every direction. First he put a very fine sand in it and plugged all the holes. He put it in the machine and let it run for 2 days. He then cleaned it and checked for leaks. He then put an epoxy type coating in and back on the machine. When I got it back it looked like a new one inside. It wasn't cheap but no more clogged fuel lines or filter.
