Don

Hello everyone, my name is Don and I'm new here. I've been riding Harleys for years now and recently picked up a 92 FJ 1200. I've loved these since they first came out. Does anyone make hard bags/mounting brackets for a bike this old? Knowledge wise I'm starting out from zero so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and have an awesome day.

There are a couple of choices for hard luggage.

If you can wait and are in no hurry. You can search for a GIVI WingRack or WingRack II. These are a universal rack and can be purchased new. The hiccup is.... The FJ1200 mounting bracket is no longer in production from GIVI. Complete rack systems do show up for sale on here and the FJ facebook pages.

A link for new WingRack. http://www.fjcatalogue.com/catalog/item/7173777/7582239.htm

Hepco & Becker sells model specific frames for the FJ. They have a more old school look. (made of tubular steel). A link for the Hepco rack and bags. www.motomachines.com

As for the bags. Both GIVI and Hepco offer a number of different designs and sizes.

The first photo is a GIVI set up. The second is a Hepco set up.

It took me several years to land a complete set of used Krauser's online, side cases and trunk with rack, and an adjustable backrest. They were actually from the 80's but still in great shape. They will also mount to just about any bike.  Mine have a cast aluminum racks, while later versions are tubular steel (I'm assuming).  This is the same as what I got, though mine was $400 CAN and I had to do a 6 hr round trip to get them.  The mounting system can be fiddled to fit just about anything despite what the ad says what bike it had been on previously.

Just a note of caution about mounting the bags. (Not a Hells Angels initiation rite...   :bad:.) It is in some threads here regarding the rear signal brackets being too weak to use as a hard point.  Many have suffered (including me) broken brackets due to very thin metal.  I had mine re welded on this winter. Many have welded a brace between the brackets on the subframe, above the rear fender.  I couldn't do this as my '92 ABS controller is in the way.

Shipping costs are a killer which is why I waited to find something "locally". Hope that helps.

Does anyone know a good place to get the hardware kit (and the rack itself) for the Givi wingrack for an 86' 1200?

Not knowing where you are located. Here are a couple of links for the GIVI Wingrack.

In the US.. http://www.twistedthrottle.com/givi-n140-wingrack-ii-top-and-side-luggage-racks

In the UK.. http://www.fjcatalogue.com/catalog/item/7173777/7582239.htm

As stated above the difficult thing with the wingrack is getting the attachment hardware for the FJ models. To the best of my knowledge. The FJowners club UK is the only place to get a reproduction hardware kit.

The east coast has 2 rallys every year.

The Spring Rally in Boone, NC. May 20-22 http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=13989.0

The Fall Rally in Bryson City, NC. September 16-18 http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=15152.0
