Supertrapp Tuning

I've got a question for those of you that happen to have the Supertrapp 4 to 1 exhaust.
How much of an effect will removing one or two of the discs make in regards to sound?  I ask because the 87 I just recently acquired has eight discs installed and is rather loud.  I ASSUME the carbs are jetted for this because the bikes runs excellent.  Do you guys know how many discs I can remove without having to rejet if at all?  Will removing ONE disc noticeably quiet the exhaust?
I'm in no hurry to fiddle with a set of carbs that feel like they're tuned dead nuts, and the exhaust note although interesting, isn't in stereo anymore and that kinda gets on my nerves (I had a stock exhaust 86 FJ a month or so ago).

+1     repacking the can makes a big difference in noise

Holy crap! One of the long allen bolt heads broke off trying to get the exhaust cap off. Now I'm screwed, I've already broke one easy-out tip off.

If you can get the rest of the bolts out you can slide the disk's off of the broken screw. I suggest using Nut buster plus or some other kind of penetrating oil on whats left the broken screw where it meets the muffler. Then you can grab whats left of the screw with a pair of vise grips. or if it broke flush against the muffler you can use a smaller drill and drill out the screw and retap the hole for a new screw....

Well we put the quiet mod on Jason's FJ. It's called the R1 can mod, If you have a mild steel Super trapp header on your FJ and want ot go quiet all it takes is 1 2.5" od. to 2.25" id adaptor and a 98>01 stock can  That you can find dirt cheep on ebay un rivet the muffler bracket to relocate it and presto chango Quiet bike .

I hope jason will post some pics of it :good:

Next is the XS1100 clutch update :good2:

Kim, cool!!   :good2:   I hope you and/or Jason will post pics...I'd love to see it!  (create you own gallery in the GALLERY section...then you can link the pics here)

BTW: neither of you have signed up for the West Coast Rally.  Do you think you can make it?  Steph did a great job at being a ride leader...though, I know it will depend on the fire season...

Marsh, The reason I have not added my nane to the list One or the other or both days I/we are not sure of the dates we would make it.

And as I have said before roughing it is a motel 6, but I found a nice super 8 on the east side of 101 :good2:

Hey guys. Kim and I slapped an R1/FZ1 exhaust can on my 87 yesterday and all works great.  Glad to be done with that raspy little Supertrapp bugger.
I'll have pictures up of the whole installation shortly but until then check this out:

This is what I plan on doing with the Supertrapp I now have on the shelf.  The only challenge will be to acquire some of the Superwool 607 without having to buy a full roll of the stuff.  I'm gonna practice re-stuffing my Supertrapp and then tackle the wifes exhaust as she has the same can.

Jason, I look forward to seeing it in person!   Can you make it to the WCR in Petaluma?

Here's what she looks like with the new R1 exhaust and existing Supertrapp manifold:

The colors don't really match the rest of the bike, but really we won't win any beauty pageants anyway.

Notice below where I cut off the stock fitting and fitted a 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 adaptor coupling.  Its so tight it doesnt really leak so the only clapm I'm using is from coupling to manifold

In order to use the exhaust bracket that came with the exhaust Kim had to remove the pop rivet and we slide the bracket to where the FJ could use it.  Still have'nt plugged the old 1/16" hole yet - big deal, I'll get around to it.
I know it looks like the strap for the exhaust is very far forward and you may be thinking that the whole thing wobbles and shakes...Wrong, solid as a rock and that thing doesnt move AT ALL.
The mounting bracket fits like a charm through the rearset with minimum finagling I even used the stock bolt and nut from the original FJ exhaust.
I cut off the stock end of the pipe with a hacksaw + Anchor cutting sauce and filed it down with a bastard. Easy Breezy, all done in about 30 minutes.

I did however cut off the bracket which only held a rubber bumper for the R1 Fairing/centerstand/who knows.  A bench grinder and it was all good.  There's also plenty of clearance for the swingarm.  If I need more I loosen the clamps and twist the whole deal till it works.

The exhaust note is much improved over the Supertrapp doohickey that was existing soley to deafen my right ear.  The note is probably a full octave & 1/2 lower. Beautiful. 8)
