Newbie with a lovely (sadly not working yet!) FJ1100

Hi everyone!

I'm Murphtang, living in Cornwall.  I started riding around 6 months ago, when I moved down here and realised that public transport is a joke.  Got myself a 125, and I love the little thing.  But I'm a bit sick of being stuck with 11 bhp, so I'm going to do my big bike test soon.  I wanted to get myself a decent first bike, but am unfortunately not the richest person.  However, I did find a bargain at a local garage, which has led me to joining this page!

I just bought myself FJ1100 from a garage for £300!  Beautiful bike, and at a price like that too good not to pick up.  I'm still on my little 125 atm, planning to do my test next year in March (when the rain will hopefully of let up a bit in Cornwall, but before the tourists arrive and clog up the roads).  This means I have lots of time to do it up.  Not much wrong with her really, she cranks but the sump is dead and it needs new rear suspension (+ some cosmetic work).  Should be a good little first project.

So yeah, thought I'd join the forum and introduce myself since I am pretty much guaranteed to ask all you lovely people questions re: fixing the bike haha  :yahoo:

Welcome Murphtang, we are mostly friendly here. So going from a 125 to 1100 will be quite a shock. These FJs are quite easy to work on so if you don't mind twisting a wrench then you can save some money. And if you catch Moditus, it might just save your liver, all your cash will go into the FJ instead of the pub. Enjoy our digital campfire. Greetings Murph, so you are going from a 125 to an 1100....that should be an awaking! (read the Kookaloo thread)

I don't know what you mean when you write that "the sump is dead"  Sump as in oil pan?

Over here when we use the word sump we typically are referring to some type of reservoir....as in oil sump.

I hope we can help you get her running. Take some time and read our File sections....lots of good stuff in there!

Hiya both, thanks for the replies :)

Haha, I'm quite looking forward to the extra power :p But I do also have a bandit 800 in the garage (not strictly mine, but I'm sure my partner will lend it to me :p) which I can take out if the FJ is too scary to begin with!

Yeah, oil sump, sorry :) basically I need a new one - luckily they are only £18 on ebay! 

Thanks for the suggestion on looking at the file sections.  I've bought myself a Haynes manual (well, ordered it, Amazon is taking it's time :/) and hopefully will be able to crack on in the new year.  Def looking forward to doing my own project, I've worked a bit on cars in the past and I do basic maintenance on my 125 (changing filters, spark plugs, oil change, stuff like that).

Ok, gotcha, broken oil pan. When you buy one, make sure it comes with the drain plug. I recall different threads on different year oil pans.

I would recommend getting a kit of gaskets. When you get into things (like the clutch) you may find the need for some additional gaskets.
You know how it works on gaskets....when you need them....you need them.

Welcome Murph ! Echoing the above comments the FJ has plenty of power and weighs in around 580 lbs (263 kg). Please take your time and be careful. It is hard to resist rolling the throttle on sometimes she likes to go faster than she stops :).  All that aside the FJ is a great all around bike and there is lots of help on the fourms.  Some have owned there FJ's since new and most do there own maint.. Not to much they haven't done or have good knowledge of.  Sometimes the trick is you have to listen to them :)  :good2:
